It turned out that Professor Yang Kefei was the university classmate of Academician Zhong Nanshan, and studied under Academician Wang Shuhuan, the "father of Hand Surgery in China". After graduating from university in 1960, he was assigned to the hand surgery department of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, the "cradle and birthplace of Hand Surgery in China", and became the director of hand surgery of Jishuitan Hospital in 1984, enjoying the special allowance of the State Council. After 17 years of working in Jishuitan Hospital, Professor Yang Kefei completed the world's first case of upper limb dissociation and ectopic replantation.
It was an incredible "magic surgery." One night in 1977, Ding Xingyou, a 19-year-old mountain infrastructure engineer, accidentally fell off a transport train and his limbs were crushed by the train, leaving only one leg intact. Yang Kefei immediately rushed from Beijing overnight to a temporary rescue station in the mountainous area, 500 kilometers away. "The young man is still young, if he doesn't have hands, how will he live in the future?"
Seeing that the unfortunate young man's left upper limb and right forearm were relatively complete, Yang Kefei suddenly had a bold idea: to transplant the right forearm to the left upper limb. No one in the world had done this before! With only simple medical tools and assistants in short supply, Yang Kefei risked putting his ideas into practice in order to save them. This upper extremity dissection ectopic reimplantation was performed for several hours and was completed early in the morning.
After the operation, Ding Xingyou's palm is the opposite of the normal palm, that is, the left hand is raised, and when the palm is facing the eye, the thumb is on the right. In order to let Ding Xingyou adapt as soon as possible, Yang Kefei carefully helped him carry out special training to achieve the effect of functional reconstruction. Later, Ding Xingyou was not only able to use this special hand to do some daily things, but also to paint.
After retiring from Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, that is, around 2000, Professor Yang Kefei was hired by Gaoxin to work in the United States, with cars, bungalows, and green cards, but he was not used to it and wanted to treat patients and save people more purely. Under the introduction of academician Wang Shuhuan, he resolutely gave up his green card to come to Foshan in 2002 to help the manufacturing city of Foshan develop hand surgery. Out of the clinic, surgery, with students, doing scientific research, he hopes to pass on the master's medical skills.
In September 2018, Yang Kefei joined the Second People's Hospital of Foshan. Although he is already eighty years old, he still insists on coming to work every weekday, attending consultations on Mondays, opening outpatient clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays, performing surgeries on Wednesdays and Fridays, and often giving lessons to young doctors during the period. Until this year, due to physical reasons, he stopped the main surgery, but still insisted on guiding young doctors on the operating table.
