On July 7, 1937, after the Japanese army launched the "Lugou Bridge Incident", which set off the prelude to a comprehensive invasion of China, it quickly occupied China's Jizhong Plain and implemented the "three-light policy" of "burning the light, killing the light, and robbing the light" of the people in the occupied area.

Yan Xiufeng, who became a guerrilla, in order to kill more Japanese Kou, worked hard to train the marksmanship of one hundred shots and one hundred shots, and became a famous sharpshooter in the pistol team, performing dangerous and arduous tasks many times and successfully completed them. Because Yan Xiufeng was bold, brave and lively and lovely, his comrades-in-arms affectionately called him "Gazi", and over time people forgot Yan Xiufeng's real name and only called him "Yan Gazi".

In just one year from 1943 to 1944, Yan Gazi personally killed 100 Japanese Kou, and before that, together with his comrades, he captured 8 Japanese artillery towers, capturing a total of 59 rifles, 40 pistols and 1 heavy machine gun. The local Japanese puppet army referred to Yan Gazi as the "Living Yama King" and even offered a reward of silver thousand and two to arrest him. In 1944, at the Second Heroic Model Conference of our Party's Jin-Cha-Ji Border Region, Yan Gazi won the title of "First-Class Combat Hero" by virtue of his courage to kill the enemy.
