He was Zhang Antai, a native of Sichuan, who joined the Red Fourth Front in Sichuan in 1933 and later became a trumpeter.
In October 1936, 21,800 men of the Red Fourth Front crossed the Yellow River to form the Western Route Army, and on October 28, all of them crossed the Yellow River and advanced towards Xinjiang through the Hexi Corridor. On December 30, he was stationed in Linze, where he propagated the anti-Japanese resistance and created a base area.
At that time, the actual control of Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai and other places in China were the local warlords Ma Bufang, Ma Buqing and Ma Hongkui, whose troops were called "Ma Jia Jun", and most of the soldiers were Hui and Salar, who believed in Islam.
