In 624 AD, the seventh year of Wude, Xiping Prefecture was established here. In 634 AD, that is, in the eighth year of Zhenguan, Xiping Prefecture at this time was changed to Panzhou. This is also the time when the place name "Panzhou" first appeared.

In 751, the tenth year of Tianbao, Yabu, who belonged to the Thirty-Seven Ministries at that time, gradually became powerful, abolished the then Panzhou and brought it under the jurisdiction of Nanzhao. In 767, the second year of the Gregorian calendar, this place belonged to the Qimibu and later returned to the jurisdiction of Yabu.

In the Song Dynasty, in 965 AD, that is, in the third year of Qiande, Song Taizu pacified the Shu state and assigned Yabu to the jurisdiction of the Dali state. In 1256, the fourth year of Baoyou, the Mongols destroyed the Dali state, and Yabu surrendered to the Mongols.

In the Yuan Dynasty, in 1276 AD, that is, in the thirteenth year of the Yuan Dynasty, it was changed to YuyawanhuFu and the Pu'an Road Governor's Office was set up, which was under the jurisdiction of the then Yunnan Province. In 1277, in the fourteenth year of the Yuan Dynasty, it was promoted to the post of Envoy of Pu'an.

In the Ming Dynasty, in 1382 AD, The Pu'an Road was changed to Pu'an Province, and later the Pu'an Pacification Division was set up. Later, this place was subordinate to Anju. In the Qing Dynasty, Pu'an County was set up, and later Pu'an Prefecture was changed to Pu'an Zhili Hall, until 1909 AD, which was changed to Panzhou Hall. During the Republic of China period, the Panzhou Hall was changed to Pan County, which was under the jurisdiction of Guizhou Province.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Pan County was successively subordinated to Xingren Special District, Xingyi Special District, Anshun Special District, and Xingyi Special District. Until 1965, the Panxian mining area was set up in the territory of Panxian at that time. The following year, the mining area was transformed into a special zone. In 1971, the Panxian Special Zone was merged with the Panxian Special Administrative Region to form the Panxian Special Economic Zone. Later, the Panxian Special Zone came under the jurisdiction of Liupanshui City. In 1999, the PanXian Special Zone was changed to Panxian County. Until 2017, Pan County was abolished and a county-level City of Panzhou was established.
