The network theme activity of "Carrying Forward the Spirit of the Great Wall and Inheriting Patriotic Feelings" is being held here. The majestic Great Wall stretches over northern China, like a giant dragon, galloping and falling in the mountains and deserts of thousands of miles. The resources of the Great Wall are mainly distributed in 15 provinces (autonomous regions and cities) such as Hebei, Beijing and Shanxi. In Shanxi, the Great Wall of the Dynasties recognized by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage has a total of 4266 points and sections, with a total length of 1401.23 kilometers, and the number of points and sections ranks third in the country.

Since 2008, the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformatics has successively participated in and undertaken a number of projects such as the national Resource Survey of the Great Wall of Ming (Shanxi Section), the 1:500 topographic map mapping of the key areas of the Ming Great Wall in Shanxi Province, the basic surveying and mapping data of the Great Wall itself, and the construction of the Protection planning database of the Great Wall of Shanxi Province.

Guo Haiqing, vice president of the Second Institute of Surveying and Mapping of the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation, said that from the initial hiking and mapping of the Great Wall in the field, to the comprehensive survey and mapping of the Great Wall itself by unmanned aerial vehicles, he has traveled almost all over the Great Wall in Shanxi in more than a decade.
The Great Wall of Shanxi is distributed in 8 cities and 39 counties (cities, districts) in the territory, covering 8 historical periods such as the Warring States, Han, Northern Dynasties (Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Northern Qi), Sui, Five Dynasties, and Ming, and the scale of construction of the Great Wall in previous dynasties is especially the most prosperous in the Ming Dynasty. The types of construction include stone walls, earthen walls, brick walls, etc., of which rammed earth plates are mostly built.
"In the process of surveying and mapping the Great Wall, field visits found that due to natural wind erosion, man-made destruction, as well as mining, land resources development, etc., many of the Great Wall remains need to be protected urgently. At present, the ecological environment is generally improving, and with the increase of rainwater, the protection of the earthen walls of the Great Wall is facing a new test. Guo Haiqing said.

Most of the remnants of the Great Wall are located in the wilderness area, which is difficult to protect and manage. Construction of projects, improper tourism development, unauthorized climbing and trampling by tourists, etc., the destruction of the Great Wall and its historical features still occurs. On April 1 this year, the Measures for the Protection of the Great Wall of Shanxi Province were officially implemented to further strengthen the protection of the Great Wall.
Guo Haiqing introduced that at this stage, the surveying and mapping personnel of the institute are relying on the new basic surveying and mapping technology to accurately collect, survey and map the Great Wall in Laoniuwan, Laoying Town, Yanmenguan, Xinguangwu and other places, and carry out the pilot work of building a geographical entity database of the county-level Ming Dynasty Great Wall and the Shanxi Ming Dynasty Inner Great Wall, and establish a perfect and unified geographical entity standard and model standard for the subsequent Great Wall protection planning.
Using unmanned aerial vehicle remote sensing patrol and other technologies, the Great Wall itself and its environment along the line to conduct a comprehensive survey and mapping, and the production of a real three-dimensional model, the Great Wall disease factors, changes, etc. to monitor, the obtained data and the existing model for comparison, so as to accurately monitor the Great Wall itself diseases and the surrounding environment and other changes.
"The great wall point cloud data being processed at Yanmenguan and Xinguangwu can provide a more detailed surface and ground model for the Great Wall and its surrounding geographical scenes, and provide the most basic surveying and mapping data information support for the protection planning of the Great Wall." Guo Fumei, engineer of Shanxi Provincial Institute of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation, introduced.
