Normandy Forever: Departure and Return

In the footsteps of the nineteenth-century Impressionists, Normandy is a glorious stroke of light. In 1845, at the age of 5, Monet returned from Paris to his home in Normandy. Here, he met many painters who came here to sketch and create, and also felt the dawn from the exploration of artistic innovation.

If Monet could be called the "father of Impressionism", then Normandy could be called the "cradle of Impressionism". From here, Normandy illuminates a glorious history of European art.

Crossing the Great Currents of Civilization: Meeting Ancient Egypt

Mummies, gold, and a fascination with the afterlife —these are all important ideas we have about ancient Egyptian civilization. But how important were these ideas to the Egyptians, and how long did they affect Egypt after the last pharaoh?

The exhibition "Meeting ancient Egypt: The Golden Mummy" reveals to the viewer what Egyptians expected from the afterlife during the relatively unknown "Greco-Roman" period (between 300 BC and 300 AD) in Egyptian history.

Entering the exhibition hall, the dark-toned light and shadow space, the frosted texture of the wall and the CT scan display screen lead the audience to start a journey of exotic culture. The display cases display portraits of Egyptians, Romans and Greeks from different periods of multicultural society, masks, clay pots, jewelry, glass containers, papyrus documents and so on. Among them, the most eye-catching is the 6 golden mummies that appear in the middle of different exhibition areas, all from ancient Egypt during the "Greco-Roman" period around the 1st century AD.

The exhibition also includes 11 fayum mummies from about 2000 years ago and 2 portrait mummies. Mummified portraits of the Roman period, the so-called "Fayoum portraits", are one of the oldest surviving types of portraiture in the world, which were discovered in the 1880s and changed the way people thought about the development of art. Each portrait is painted on a thin wooden board with a mixture of hot wax and pigments, creating a realistic effect that meets modern tastes.
