Diary Mingzhi
He Ruilin
(1909–1928)
In 1909, He Ruilin was born in Jing'an Town, Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, and in 1925, he was admitted to the Affiliated Middle School of Southeast University.
At that time, under the rule of the Beiyang warlords, the people were miserable. At the same time, He Ruilin began to contact various progressive books, from a peasant boy who aspired to become a "glorious doorway" to a revolutionary fighter who sought liberation for the toiling masses of the world.

In the spring of 1925, He Ruilin joined the Communist Youth League and soon joined the Communist Party of China. Because of his outstanding ability to carry out revolutionary activities, in May 1928, he was elected as a member of the Nanjing Municipal Party Committee and secretary of the Youth League Municipal Committee. But just two months later, on July 6, 1928, He Ruilin was arrested.
In prison, He Ruilin kept thinking about what else he could do for the party when he lost his freedom and his life was coming to an end. He decided to record in detail the brutal atrocities of the enemy and the struggle of the arrested people in prison, and eventually wrote a total of eight diaries, including the September Diary and the Diary Before Death. These diaries record He Ruilin's journey from a "personal hero" full of enthusiasm and no way to serve the country to a "proletarian revolutionary" full of ideals.
He Ruilin's "Diary Before Death" written by He Ruilin in prison
During this time, He Ruilin also left a letter to his relatives and friends, and in his suicide note to his parents, he said the voice of "for everyone, abandon the small family" and expressed his deep regret for the family. In the face of death, he firmly wrote: "The future world is ours after all!" ”
In 1928, he Ruilin wrote a letter to his brother-in-law Yuan Lichao while in prison
He Ruilin's farewell letter to his parents
On October 6, 1928, He Ruilin calmly walked out of the detention center and walked to the Yuhuatai Execution Ground, sacrificing his life at the age of 19 for the revolutionary cause, and the "Diary Before Death" he left behind became the most precious spiritual force left to future generations.
Before He Ruilin's death, he instructed his family to hand over the "Diary before Death" to the hands of student Liu Dechao. After experiencing various twists and turns such as prison searches and the war between Japan and Kosovo, in 1952, this mutilated diary was transferred to Yuhuatai, and was later rated as a national first-class revolutionary cultural relic, becoming the "treasure of the town hall" of the Yuhuatai Martyrs Memorial Hall. It has also become an eternal brilliance beyond the time and space of life, reflecting the heroic and indomitable integrity of Yuhua and the youth of the great shore, inspiring every revolutionary and future generation.
