Finally, on December 14, 1724 (January 27, 1725 in the Gregorian calendar), he was imprisoned and died in Xian'an Palace. It is not easy for the crown prince to meet a living father, this person has been the prince for 25 years, and as a result, he suffered a stroke in bed, and when he heard that his father died, he was so excited that he stood up and ascended the throne.
He was Li Xie, the eleventh emperor of the Tang Dynasty, before him and his father. The Tang Dynasty already had several excellent emperors, Li Shimin, Li Zhi, Wu Zetian, and of course, before him, there were also many princes who had gone through hardships to ascend the throne. Li Was born on january 8, 761, in the first month of the second year of the reign of Emperor Shangyuan, the son of Empress Zhaode's Wang clan. He was also the eldest son of Emperor Dezong of Tang. Although the Tang Dynasty did not establish the eldest son, after all, Li Shimin still killed the eldest son to become emperor, but Li Xuan's identity still brought him a lot of convenience.
After his birth, he was given the title of King of Xuancheng County, and when he was nineteen years old, he was first crowned King Xuancheng. It was also this year that his thirty-eight-year-old father Li Shi ascended the throne. In December of the same year, Li Xuan was made crown prince. At this time, Li Xuan was already a father, and his eldest son Li Chungang was born a year before he became crown prince. Li Xuan, the crown prince, was very unstable, and in the fourth year of Jianzhong (783), Jingyuan mutinied and Chang'an City fell. Li Xuan was still relatively brave at this time, and he led his soldiers to resist the enemy and won the victory in the defense of Fengtian.
However, his instability had not yet come to an end, and an incident occurred in August of the third year of Zhenyuan (787), and Princess Gao Guochang was imprisoned. The matter has to start from her marriage, Princess Gao Guo is the daughter of Suzong, and her horse name is Xiao Sheng. After the two had a daughter and several sons, Xiao Sheng died. However, at that time, Princess Gaoguo was not particularly old, and after the death of her husband, Princess Gaoguo had an innocent relationship with many Korean and Chinese ministers. Even more importantly, Gao Guo was involved in a witchcraft technique, which was taboo for almost all emperors. Tang Dezong was no exception, and when he was angry, he called the crown prince Li Xuan over and scolded him.
He even had the idea of deposing the crown prince, but only because the next prince he wanted to establish was not his own son that he was denied by the prime minister Li Bi. And why the princess of Gaoguo's witchcraft would implicate the prince, we have to talk about her daughter, her daughter Xiao Shi married the prince. Princess Gao Guo used this relationship to act recklessly, and Tang Dezong wanted to kill the princess, and the prince just said divorce. So the emperor became angry, but poor Xiao shi was later killed.
Princess Gao guo was put under house arrest, and since then, the relationship between the two fathers and sons has been frozen. From then on, Li Xuan seemed to have no joy or sorrow, and he was always serious in front of Tang Dezong and the chancellor. He neither co-opted nor denigrated him in the imperial court, of course, these are all superficial phenomena. In private, Li Xuan would talk about the world's affairs with people he trusted, but the repressed life of the crown prince made his health very poor. In September of the twentieth year of Zhenyuan (804), he suffered a stroke and collapsed in bed.
Tang Dezong was already old at this time, and he became very concerned about his son's body. He often visited him and searched for famous doctors, but with no success. At the end of the year, Tang Dezong also fell ill, and in the twenty-first year of Zhenyuan (805), Tang Dezong died of illness, and before his death, he did not mention the change of the crown prince, but kept reading the name of the prince. Unfortunately, Li Xuan fell ill in bed, and the father and son were not able to see each other.
After Emperor Dezong's death, Li Xuan succeeded to the throne. It is also strange to say, I don't know if it was the death of his father that stimulated Li Shu, who had suffered a stroke in bed and was able to stand up when he heard the news. Not long after completing the enthronement ceremony, he began to be in poor health, and after 186 days of reign, he passed the throne to the crown prince Li Chun. On the nineteenth day of the first month of the first year of The reign of Emperor Xianzong of Tang (806), Li Xuan died of illness.
