The poignant love story of Xu Xian and the White Lady is familiar to Chinese. The love in the smoke and rain of Jiangnan began with an oil-paper umbrella.

The story takes place during the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty, when it is nearly clear and rainy. Xu Xian took the paper money, paper horses and other supplies purchased by his sister to the Baochu Pagoda Temple to burn incense to pay tribute to the ancestors. On the boat ride home, it was raining and two women came on board. The woman in white was beautiful and dusty, the woman in green looked handsome, and there were only three of them in the cabin.

The woman in white called herself the White Lady, and her name was Xiao Qing, and she lived in the White House of the Double Tea House, and then there was a pair of chats. The White Lady's bright eyes were good-eyed, Gu Panshengzi, Xu Xian found himself involuntarily attracted to her, wanting to prolong the time they spent together, and then extend it. When the two masters and servants were about to get off the ship, Xu Xian hurriedly took out his own purple bamboo handle oil-paper umbrella and lent it to them. In the book, the author describes the scene of borrowing an umbrella with delicate brushstrokes:
