At that time, Zheng Chaoyuan was only 18 years old.
Zheng Chaoyuan was born in 1935 in Tongnan County, Sichuan Province (now part of Chongqing), and in December 1950, when he was just 15 years old, Zheng Chaoyuan signed up for the Volunteer Army and became a small soldier in the 1st Company of the 540th Regiment of the 180th Division of the 60th Army.
Zheng Chaoyuan is a new soldier, unlike other veterans, who have experienced the War of Resistance Against Japan and the War of Liberation, so when he first participated in the battle, he seemed a little nervous, shooting a gun and even forgetting to pull the bolt, and the veterans looked at him nervously and laughed at him as a new recruit.
Zheng Chaoyuan's self-esteem was very strong, so he practiced his skills hard, practicing marksmanship and tactics as soon as he had time, and he must first sign up for any company to carry out tasks. After a few months, he was no longer the object of ridicule by the veterans, but had many new titles: "Desperate Sanlang", "Sharpshooter", and "Beast".
In the more than three years since entering the DPRK, Zheng Chaoyuan has participated in more than 200 battles, received many meritorious awards, and soon grew from a soldier to a squad leader. His most famous battle was the Battle of Baiyan Mountain Ridge in the Battle of Jincheng.
In July 1953, the Battle of Jincheng began. Zheng Chaoyuan's company was tasked with breaking through between Baiyan Mountain and Heights 1118 to block the enemy. The deputy company commander took Zheng Chaoyuan's squad and another squad to form a prominent platoon and quickly moved towards Baiyan Mountain, however, just when they suddenly attacked the Ridge Ridge, they encountered a dense enemy fire blockade, and the first wave of shock killed 8 soldiers, and the troops suffered heavy casualties.
At this time, the deputy company commander commanded the second wave of charge, however, the enemy fire was still very strong, and the deputy company commander and another squad leader were heroically sacrificed. Zheng Chaoyuan, as the only remaining squad leader, took on the command task and led the whole class to creep forward. However, when it was about 60 meters away from the enemy position, it was impossible to advance any further, and Zheng Chaoyuan carefully observed and found that the enemy's fire point was the crossfire formed by the two machine guns in front of the formation and the heavy machine guns in the bunker.
Zheng Chaoyuan calmly responded to the battle, quickly moved to a mound, took out a rifle and aimed at it, as a result, 4 shots were slammed, and two machine gun positions were dudded. In just a few seconds, Zheng Chaoyuan waved a big hand, and the whole class quickly jumped forward 30 meters.
At this time, the enemy's dark fortress spewed out fierce tongues of fire, once again suppressing Zheng Chaoyuan and others. Under the order of Zheng Chaoyuan, everyone threw grenades together, and suddenly, there was a cloud of smoke near the bunker, taking advantage of this gap, Zheng Chaoyuan rushed to the enemy bunker like an arrow off the string, pulled the grenade and stuffed it into the bunker, only to hear a bang, the bunker was blown up.
Zheng Chaoyuan did not dare to rest, he knew that this was the throat of the enemy's escape, and he would definitely launch a fierce attack here, so he quickly led everyone to build fortifications. Sure enough, two hours later, two companies of the enemy launched a tidal attack here.
After the enemy failed several attacks, he no longer organized infantry charges, but used platoons of artillery to bombard our positions in turn, and the fortifications built by Zheng Chaoyuan and his comrades were quickly destroyed, and everyone was injured to varying degrees, and Zheng Chaoyuan's head and abdomen were hit by shrapnel, and blood flowed.
After the bombardment, the enemy launched several rounds of charge again, but all of them were pushed back by the whole class led by Zheng Chaoyuan. In the most dangerous one, when the enemy's three platoons were already close to the front of our position, Zheng Chaoyuan roared and rushed to the enemy group with an explosive pack, ready to die with the enemy. The enemy was frightened, turned around and ran, and Zheng Chaoyuan threw the explosive package at the enemy group and rolled into a crater himself.
However, the power of the explosive package was too great, and although he hid in the crater, he was also stunned, but fortunately his comrades rescued him in time.
In this way, Zheng Chaoyuan took his comrades-in-arms like nails to rivet on the position, persisted for 16 hours, annihilated 267 enemy people, and Zheng Chaoyuan alone annihilated 122 enemy people, creating an amazing miracle! The military history of the 60th Army commented: "This is a model example of winning more with less, creating a miracle in the history of volunteer army combat!" ”
In view of his heroic performance, the Headquarters of the Volunteer Army awarded him special merit and awarded him the honorary title of "Hero of the Second Class".
In 1964, Zheng Chaoyuan was too badly injured to adapt to the heavy training tasks, so he had to take the initiative to transfer to the local area. After that, Zheng Chaoyuan worked in peace of mind in the local area and never mentioned to anyone his exploits during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
