As early as September this year, sources revealed that Tesla and Samsung's electronic foundry departments have been designing chips and producing samples since the beginning of this year. Recently, Tesla decided to outsource the HW4.0 autopilot chip to Samsung.
It is worth mentioning that the new Tesla car machine chip will be produced using Samsung's 7nm process, which may be a little behind 5nm, but it can ensure higher production efficiency and yield rate.
The new HW4.0 car-based chipset will replace the HW3.0 currently used in Tesla vehicles, providing computing power support for Tesla's Autopilot and advanced driver assistance functions such as FSD. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has claimed that this in-vehicle computer is called "fully autonomous driving computer version 2.0" and will be "1000% safer" than human drivers and 700% safer than version 1.0, which means that the computing power of the new car machine is much stronger than the previous generation.
The new car hardware can not only provide faster and stronger processing power for future autonomous vehicles, but also improve high-precision navigation, high-definition video playback, multi-device interconnection, large-scale game entertainment and other aspects. It is reported that the Tesla electric pickup truck Cyberruck mass production version will be unveiled together with the HW4.0 car computer, but this pickup truck has dragged on for so many years, users who really want to buy pickup trucks have basically run to buy Ford, Musk blows it safely, it is better to hurry up and deliver it.
We all know that the car turned to electrification, the demand for chips is much higher than before, several chip manufacturers are increasing the research and development of car chips, Samsung in order to grab the "cake" of new energy vehicle chips, naturally to engage in some action. At present, Samsung has begun mass production of DDR4 memory, GDDR6 graphics cards, UFS memory chips and new solid-state drives for automobiles. In addition, Samsung has previously released the Exynos Auto T5123, an in-vehicle chip that supports 5G, and the Exynos Auto V7, an image processing chip, which has been applied to Volkswagen's smart cockpit platform.
