Luoyang found that the suspected Taiping Princess's mansion occupied half of the lifang

The ruins of Zhengpingfang in Luoyang, Henan, are one of the important Lifang ruins in the Guochenglifang Area of Luoyang City in the Tang Dynasty, and are the location of the Tang Dynasty Confucius Temple, Guozijian, and Taiping Princess Residence (later changed to Anguo Female Taoist Temple).

Since April last year, the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Luoyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology have formed a joint archaeological team to excavate the Zhengpingfang site. The site is rectangular in plan, with a length of 533.6 meters from north to south and a width of 464.6 meters from east to west. The square is divided into three parts by a "D" shaped road: the western half of the square, the southeast district and the northeast district.

Shi Zishe, director of the Luoyang Workstation of the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, leader of the Luoyang Tangcheng Archaeological Task Force and associate researcher, introduced at the network meeting site that the western half of the site is a large mansion, the southern half of the mansion is speculated to be a garden area, and the northern part is a courtyard area. The courtyard is symmetrically arranged in the central axis, with three roads in the east and west, and a total of five entrances in the middle road. On the central axis, from south to north, there are five large rammed earth platforms, enclosed by walls (or corridors), which are presumed to be the residences of princess Taiping.

In the southeast area, three courtyards side by side with east and west were found, and there were north-south passages between the courtyards, and there were pavilions (or buildings) at the northern end of the passage. The east road and middle road of the courtyard are both three entrances, which are speculated to be the Confucius Temple and the Guozijian respectively.

The Taiping Princess's "mansion" has attracted the attention of archaeology enthusiasts. On the afternoon of the 14th, the reporter of Dahe News Yu Visited the site for the first time, and the site is currently undergoing the next step of excavation and source exploration.

The only well-preserved Tang Dynasty Lifang site in the country

"Next to Guozijian we found a medium-sized kiln workshop." At the site of the site, Zhang Ruyi, a senior technician from the Luoyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, pointed to a stack of excavated bricks and tiles and showed the details of the "Tang bricks" to the netizens of Dahe Bao Yu Video, which triggered netizens to praise and marvel.

Zhang Ruyi told reporters that a total of 11 excavation areas were excavated at the Zhengpingfang site, and excavated in the southeast corner, southeast corner, south end of the eastern central axis, South Square Gate, south end of the western central axis, north end of the western central axis, southwest corner, northwest corner, North Square Gate, northeast corner and other areas. The four to the four of ZhengpingFang are basically clear, with an east-west length of 464.6 meters, a north-south length of 533.6 meters, and a wall width of about 1.3-1.4 meters. The general location of the north and south gates is clear. The location, width and preservation of the three avenues outside the square, namely the cross street road and the south (Yongtongmen Street), the east and the north street outside the square, are clear.

It is reported that a large number of lotus-patterned tiles, cylinder tiles, plate tiles, ridge decorations and other architectural components have been excavated from the Zhengpingfang site, as well as daily necessities such as blue glaze, white glaze and black glazed cups, plates, bowls and so on. The pattern of the T-shaped street connecting the north and south square gates, as well as the symmetrical and multi-progressive courtyard layout of the central axis, embodies the traditional urban planning ideas of ancient China and is an important example of the history of the development of ancient Chinese architecture. The architectural base site of the western half of the square is grand in scale, similar to the architectural specifications and layout of the Palace in Luoyang City in the Tang Dynasty, and the excavated building components are the same as those seen in the palace; the phenomenon of the opening of the door of the eastern half of the square also shows its special status, which is close to the functional attributes of the Taiping Princess Residence, the Guozijian and the Confucius Temple recorded in the literature.

"Due to the farmland above the zhengpingfang ruins earlier, the damage affected by human activities is small, and the Zhengpingfang ruins area is the only well-preserved Tang Dynasty Lifang area in the country." Wang Ju, a researcher at the Luoyang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the leader of the archaeological team of the Zhengpingfang site, told reporters that the excavation of the Zhengpingfang site provided important information for the study of the history of the political system and social life in the Tang Dynasty.

It is reported that in the next step, archaeological researchers will continue to carry out relevant archaeological and cultural relics protection and research work. "When the archaeological excavation work is carried out to a certain extent, in the future, it may show the charm of the ancient capital of Sui and Tang Dynasties to the public through the protection, display and utilization of heritage parks and other forms." Wang Ju said.

■ Trivia Princess Taiping:

As the "pearl in the palm" of Empress Wu Zetian, Princess Taiping was undoubtedly the "top stream" of that era. Princess Taiping (c. 665–713), the younger daughter of Emperor Gaozong of Tang and Wu Zetian, was the last daughter of the two, and was extremely favored by her parents and brothers, especially her mother Wu Zetian, and was in power for a while. Princess Taiping was killed by his nephew Tang Xuanzong after he came to power, and the mansion was confiscated and changed to an Anguo Female Taoist Temple.
