【Original】Rumi four sonnets: Looking for you

Rumi's four sonnets are four

(i)

Once when lying in the heart of a pearl,

Is my happiest moment;

Until, until, the hurricane of life hits,

The waves of life urged me to escape.

I say aloud the secrets of the ocean,

Like thunder;

On the shore I fell asleep,

Like a broken cloud, it does not move.

Happy was I

In the pearl’s heart to lie;

Till, lashed by life’s hurricane,

Life a tossed wave I ran.

The secret of the sea

I uttered thunderously;

Like a spent cloud on the shore

I slept, and stirred no more.

(ii)

He set the world on fire,

and put me together to burn;

A hundred tongues of fire,

The pyre that surrounds me burns.

When the blazing heat devours me,

I mourn,

He quickly closed my mouth with his hand.

He set the world aflame,

And laid me on the same;

A hundred tongues of fire

Lapped round my pyre.

And when the blazing tide

Engulfed me, and I sighed,

Upon my mouth in haste

His hand He placed.

(iii)

Remembering your lips,

Like my rosy kiss;

There is no nostalgia,

My fragrant lips began to think of you.

Stretch out my passionate hands

Can't touch your distant sky

Why do ministers kneel? I believe in the truth.

Remembering Thy lip,

The ruby red I kiss;

Having not that to sip,

My lips press this.

Not to Thy far sky

Reaches my stretched hand,

Wherefore kneeling, I

Embrace the land.

(iv)

I went to the ocean to find life,

Corals were found there;

It hides under the bubble to hide from me,

A vast ocean is in front of you.

Along narrow paths,

Walk into the night of my soul;

I explore;

Yikes! The light of the True Zai is infinitely wide.

I sought a soul in the sea

And found a coral there;

Beneath the foam for me

An ocean was all laid bare.

Into my heart’s night

Along a narrow way

I groped; and lo! the light,

An infinite land of day.
