There are many aliases for goji berries, including more than ten such as celestial spirits, earth immortals, beets, immortal staffs, and west queen mother staffs. However, in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, goji berries had only one single-character name, known as "杞", "Shijing · Xiaoya Beishan", "Zhi Bi Bei Shan, Yan Cai Qi Qi" (陟音 zhì, the meaning of ascending high), this poem means "climb the high North Mountain, to pick up the red and colorful goji berries". The Book of Poetry, Guofeng, and Zhongzi "Will Zhongzi Xi, no more than me, no folding of my tree berries", means "to persuade (the man in his heart) Zhongzi not to climb over the wall, so as not to break the branches of the wolfberry (of course, not to be stingy with the wolfberry tree, but because I am afraid of my 'words of my parents')". In this era, goji berries had only one milk name: berries. Around the Tang Dynasty, it had a scientific name: goji berries.

That is to say, after a thousand years of growth, its old roots and old stems are shaped like dogs, so they are named "goji berries". However, for this statement, Li Shizhen, a Ming Dynasty man, did not put forward a basis for examination, so he "did not review it." In fact, in some poems of the Tang Dynasty, the saying that goji berries are named after dogs has long been common. In the Poem of Bai Juyi of the Tang Dynasty" "He Guo Lingjun Titled Goji Berry", there is a sentence that "I don't know the root of the elixir into a dog, and I hear the night bark when I hear it"; in Liu Yuxi's poem "Goji Berry Well", there is also a saying that "the branch is a cactus staff, and the root can become the shape of a Rui dog". In the Song Dynasty, this statement was even more widely spread, and Su Shi's "Goji Berry" poem Yun: "It seems to smell Zhu Mingjian, there is a thousand years of quality." Ling Pang or night bark, visible and unsurpassable", the sentence "Pang" (pronounced máng) in ancient Chinese is known as "máng (尨 (máng)", referring to "hairy dog", these two verses are said to say that I heard that there are thousands of goji berries in Luofu Mountain Stream, but I am worried that this "fairy dog" will bark in the middle of the night, so I can't get it. In Su Shi's other poem "HeTao Tao Tao Yuan", "Linggui also sucks in the morning, the dog or barks at night", and Shi Ziyu's "Wolfberry Fu": "The fairy staff flies in the air, like a luan, shou yu psychic, when smelling barking (尨)", it is also said that the dry shape of the goji berries is like a dog.
