Turkey's currency crisis has spread to the northern part of neighboring Syria, where wages have shrunk sharply and purchasing power is at an all-time low, France's 24 report. Since last year, the northern part of Syria, controlled by Turkish-backed rebels, has switched to the lira as the main currency, replacing the sharply depreciated Syrian pound. The Turkish lira has depreciated by about 45 percent against the dollar this year, adding to the already war-torn region of northern Syria. A teacher living in the northern Syrian city of Bab said the plummeting lira had reduced his salary by two-thirds. His salary in 2017 was about $160, but now it's $50, just enough to barely pay rent.

In addition, most of the products in the local market come from Turkey, where inflation is soaring as fast as turkey, and the prices of basic foods such as bread have reached record levels, causing people's purchasing power to fall to record lows. According to a recent United Nations report, 97 per cent of the region's population lives in extreme poverty, including those with jobs.
