Liu Heping: How to interpret the speech of the Wang Yang Strait Forum?

Straight News: How do you interpret the speech made by Wang Yang, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, at the 13th Straits Forum?

Special Commentator Liu Heping: I have noticed that in his speech, Wang Yang emphasized the important speeches delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China this year, the commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution, and the historical resolutions deliberated and adopted by the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee. When these speeches and resolutions talk about the Taiwan issue, they all have one thing in common, that is, they solemnly declare their principles and stand on resolving the Taiwan issue and realizing the complete reunification of the motherland in the process of national rejuvenation. The subtext behind this is actually that only by resolving the Taiwan issue and realizing cross-strait reunification can we truly achieve the strategic goal of national rejuvenation. Realizing national rejuvenation is a historical mission that the mainland must accomplish in a not-so-distant period of time, which means that settling the Taiwan issue and realizing the reunification of the motherland will also be a historical mission that must be fulfilled in a not-so-distant period of time.

In his subsequent speech, Wang Yang expounded the reasons for "why the mainland was able to realize the reunification of the motherland within a not-too-distant period of time" from the aspects of "the mainland has the confidence to resolve the Taiwan issue with confidence in victory" and "the mainland has a firm determination to curb the interference of Taiwan independence and external forces," and once again issued a stern warning to the DPP authorities, which are relying on foreigners and respecting themselves. I believe that the signal behind these speeches is that in view of the increasingly severe situation in the Taiwan Strait, the work of opposing "independence" and promoting reunification has been put on the agenda.
