On December 8, 2021, the Beijing Cultural and Expo Exchange Center (Beijing Zhihua Temple Management Office) and Beijing University of Technology jointly carried out the project of "Research on The Information Collection and Simulation Restoration of Ming Dynasty Color Paintings in Zhihua Temple", which achieved a series of important achievements in filling the gap in China. It has laid the foundation for the improvement of the research system of official color painting, the establishment of a comparative research platform for the process of Song, Ming and Qing color paintings, and the scientific development of the color painting protection system.
The project selected the existing Sanskrit triangular ceiling of the southeast corner of the Ten Thousand Buddha Pavilion, the rectangular ceiling of the Sanskrit character of the Ten Thousand Buddha Pavilion, the spiny paint of the bottom of the beam of the Ten Thousand Buddha Pavilion, the triangular ceiling of the Sanskrit character of the southwest corner of the Rulai Hall, the square ceiling of the six-character Mantra of the Rulai Hall, the brahman character ceiling of the staircase on the west side of the Rulai Hall, the Brahman character Square Heart of the Tibetan Scripture Cabinet of the Rulai Hall, and the brahmana character ceiling of the Great Wisdom Hall as the research objects.
With the research on information collection and simulation restoration as the core content, this project analyzes the craft characteristics of the eight color paintings, conducts a comprehensive study and display of the Architectural Paintings of the Ming Dynasty of Zhihua Temple, conducts a new exploration of the protection, restoration, display and research of architectural color painting heritage, promotes the integration and progress of modern science and technology and traditional crafts in the field of heritage protection, and provides assistance for the protection of architectural heritage in the new era.

The meeting was presided over by Yang Zhiguo, the person in charge of the project, and made an overall report, introducing the important value of the eight Zhihua Temple color paintings involved in this year's project, the information collection and analysis process of color paintings, the process and practices in the process of simulation and restoration, and highlighting the important achievements such as the gold cutting process, copper chloride ore cover dyeing, and the construction sequence of Ming Dynasty color paintings found in the project.
Subsequently, the members of the research group reported the experience of participating in the project one by one in the past year, university professors, museum researchers, senior painters, everyone helped each other to learn from each other, harvested a lot, and combined with the actual work and personal interests, wrote 7 papers, covering the craft, ornamentation, color, information collection methods, exhibition display methods, digital protection, social education, cultural and creative development of the Ming Dynasty paintings of Zhihua Temple.
The meeting invited Hou Zhaonian, former director of the Beijing Institute of Ancient Architecture, Fang Yong, professor of the School of Archaeology and Literature of Peking University, and Guo Bao, former director of the Beijing Museum of Stone Carving Art and research librarian, as acceptance experts, on the basis of listening to the report on the conclusion of the research group and the students' experiences, reviewed the relevant final materials, and visited the samples of the ming dynasty color painting simulation and restoration of the Zhihua Temple, and unanimously agreed that this project has created a new method of color painting research, and through information collection and simulation restoration, the protection of the Ming Dynasty color paintings of the Zhihua Temple. The research has played an important role, the project has achieved the research objectives, completed the scientific research tasks, reached the training goal of passing on the help of scientific researchers, agreed to conclude the topic, and also put forward valuable suggestions for the follow-up research of the topic.
Hou Zhaonian: For many years, he has been paying close attention to ancient paintings, and on the basis of studying the history and culture of color paintings, he has improved the scientific value expression of ancient paintings through high-tech equipment. The ancient construction engineering practices of the Ming Dynasty lack documentation, and this project explores the technological process of Ming Dynasty color painting on the basis of using new technology testing, and constantly updates the concept of cultural relics protection. The architectural paintings of Zhihua Temple retain a large amount of historical information of the Ming Dynasty, which makes the ancient building objects and the craftsmanship dictated by the teacher Fu corroborate each other and are particularly precious.
Fang Yong: The color painting of Zhihua Temple is a representative of the official practice of the Ming Dynasty, which is no less than that of the Forbidden City. In the first half of the fifteenth century, the culture of this period was very inclusive, including ethnic exchanges between Han and Tibet, and the combination of royal and folk practices. Today's color painting project has achieved a series of important achievements, the ming Dynasty ancient building color painting art displayed is exquisite and meticulous, it is our precious historical and cultural heritage, which helps to enhance the cultural self-confidence of the Chinese nation, it can be said that the color painting creation of ancient Chinese craftsmen is no different from that of the West. Guo Bao: Zhihua Temple is one of the first batch of state security units, and the ancient buildings of the Ming Dynasty that have been preserved to this day are particularly precious, and they are a treasure house of culture and art. With a scientific and rigorous work style, the Ming Dynasty Color Painting Research Group completed the information collection of the shape, color, pigment and other aspects of the color paintings of Zhihua Temple through multidisciplinary cooperation, and did simulation restoration, with remarkable results. It is recommended that the next step is to do a good job in exhibition display, carry out publicity and education for young people, and further explore the historical and cultural connotations contained in Zhihua Temple.
