Investigation: More than half of New York City's officers regret joining the police department

According to 1010WINS, 56 percent of officers said they would not become officers if they could be re-selected. 46% of officers feel that they are not respected by the public, and 44% of police officers feel that the public distrusts them.

The internal investigation, which began in March, questioned 5,935 of the 36,000 officers at the New York City Police Department.

Overall, officers are pessimistic about the direction of New York City, with 79 percent believing that New York City will not be "safe" in two years.

The survey showed that there were clear differences between officers and police station management, with 78% of officers saying they did not feel the support of the police station and 73% of police officers saying that excellent officers did not receive the recognition they deserved.

Sources said the criminal justice reforms triggered by the death of George Floyd, an African-American man, had demoralized police officers.

In a letter to officers, NYPD Dermot Shea said the investigation was designed to help decide "how the department can improve — both internally and in terms of policing policy."
