The Washington Post and The Guardian report that although countries have made a series of commitments to reduce carbon emissions at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), the actual effect may not be satisfactory. The latest research shows that according to the 10-year emission reduction targets set by countries, global temperatures could rise by 2.4 degrees Celsius by the end of this century, far exceeding the ideal outcome of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

On the 10th, COP26 announced the draft climate agreement. While the draft sets a target of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius and minimizing 1.5 degrees Celsius, it does not set specific targets for the phase-out of fossil fuels such as coal. The draft also calls on developed countries to increase climate finance assistance to low-income countries, but there is no specific plan or details of what support rich countries will provide after 2025.

The latest study released by the global think tank "Climate Action Tracking Organization" on the 9th pointed out that the world will heat up by 2.4 degrees by 2100. The forecast comes as the Met Office warns that if the global average temperature is 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels, 1 billion people will be affected by deadly heat and humidity. Charity WaterAid said COP26 ignored the lack of water. The organization's data shows that climate funding to tackle the water crisis in 2020 is less than 3% of the overall.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin stressed on the 10th that in dealing with climate change, China has not only set goals, but also formulated a specific timetable and road map. China will continue to keep its promises, implement the Nationally Determined Contribution To Climate Change by 2030 in a down-to-earth manner, and make China's contribution to the global response to climate change.
