World Book Day: Take you into Freud's dreams, betrayals and ambitions

author:Female Doctor of Jiaotong University

I am a very book lover, when I was young, there was a bookstore next door, and since I was a child, I liked to be buried in the pile of books and swim in the sea of books. When I was a child, I didn't know how to screen, and I read books quickly, and basically every book I could read had to be read. From Jin Yong's martial arts world to Qiong Yao's Mandarin duck butterfly, from "Dream of the Red Chamber" to "Pride and Prejudice" to grow up with me are all kinds of novels, comics, Chinese and foreign masterpieces. I have been studying in college since I became an adult, and of course I must read a lot of professional books. After reading so many books, when I received a notice to recommend books to everyone, I didn't know how to start for a while. Why? Each reader's professional field is different, the interests and hobbies are also different, if the recommended book is too professional, the reader who is not professional will feel obscure, and the recommended book is too ordinary, it will be superfluous.

After thinking about it, I decided to recommend the book "Freud - Dreams, Betrayal, Ambition". I found this book in the library of Jiaotong University, and when I found it, I loved it and read it in one breath. The book was translated by Yang Rui and is titled A Dream Of Undying Fame. The protagonist of this book, Freud, is the builder of the social trend of contemporary Western irrational psychology, the founder of man's "half spiritual world", unconscious psychology, and the founder of the new medical model and psychotherapy of "bio-psycho-social". The original author, Louis Breger, is emeritus professor of psychoanalytic research at the California Institute of Technology and Foundations and president of the Los Angeles Contemporary Psychoanalytic Association.

Why should I recommend this book?

First of all, psychology is closely related to everyone's life, especially in today's fast-paced, high-pressure world, many people are in a psychological and physiological sub-health state, and understanding a little psychological knowledge is very practical for everyone. Freud was an Austrian psychiatrist, psychologist, and founder of the psychoanalytic school. Whether you study psychology or not, it's helpful to read the books and learn a little bit about it for yourself, your friends, and your family.

A few years ago, when I was still in college, I met a mother and son, the child had mental problems, could not go to school, and could only be nursed in a mental hospital. The mother quit her job to spend time with her children in a psychiatric hospital. It's hard for me to forget the despair of a mother with a wad of money trying to save her child, but no amount of money is useful. If parents know more about psychology, they may be able to prevent microaggressions and let their children grow up healthy.

Secondly, this is also a very important reason. Many readers in reading or life, when they mention the names of Freud, Aristotle, Foucault, etc., will reflexively think, "Don't mention these 'big people' to me", "Are you pretending*?" "Subconsciously avoid these topics and characters. But I would like to say that this invisible obstacle should not be erected between us and these sages. Getting close to and getting to know them will also be a wonderful experience.

What we need to know is that to understand this character, you can't just search and browse on Baidu Encyclopedia, so that what you are left with can only be a blunt character and a dull thought. By reading the biography and understanding the growth and development process of this character, you can truly understand this person and his thoughts. Only then can he come alive and truly become a Freud (or anyone else) you know.

It is better to teach people to fish than to teach people to fish, here, I don't want to give you a bunch of blunt lists, I want to recommend a book to tell everyone how to read. This is an information age, but also a fragmented reading era, can not stay on Baidu Encyclopedia and social networks to bring you shallow reading. Only by reading more classics and obtaining more in-depth first-hand information can we form more mature value judgments.

This book takes you into history, discovers facts, and restores a flesh-and-blood Freud for you. "Break the illusion and let you really understand the flaws of the master and the flaws of human nature." Moreover, the translator Sindaya's translation also made the book very readable. After reading this book, I believe you will have a better understanding of Freud, his dreams, betrayals, and ambitions.
