World Telecommunication Day: The telecom industry embraces AI and accelerates digital innovation

author:NVIDIA China

May 17 is the 56th World Telecommunication Day. The theme of this year's World Telecommunication Day is "Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development". In fact, the telecom industry is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by next-generation digital technologies such as 5G/6G, AI, and digital twins.

NVIDIA's latest State of AI in Telcos: Trends for 2024 report sheds further light on emerging trends in AI transformation in telecommunications. According to the report, 43% of respondents said they are investing in generative AI, and the telecom industry is embracing generative AI and AI technologies to achieve a variety of business goals.

NVIDIA's AI technology and full-stack AI solutions are powering digital innovation in the telecom industry. Here's a look at the latest developments from NVIDIA to power digital innovation in the telecom industry, as well as the rapidly evolving and innovative applications for AI adoption in the telecom industry.

NVIDIA 6G Research Cloud Platform

Help unlock the potential of 6G

As a new generation of digital information infrastructure, 6G will become a bridge between the physical and digital worlds, helping to realize the transition from the Internet of Everything to the Intelligent Connection of Everything. And AI is essential in 6G networks. Recently, NVIDIA launched its 6G research cloud platform. This platform not only provides researchers with a new way to develop the next phase of wireless technology, but also marks a significant step forward in the AI development of radio access network (RAN) technology.

Open, flexible, and connected, the NVIDIA 6G Research Cloud Platform provides researchers with a comprehensive set of tools that enable enterprises to accelerate the development of 6G technology that connects trillions of devices to cloud infrastructure and lay the foundation for a super-intelligent world powered by autonomous vehicles, smart spaces, and a variety of extended reality and immersive educational experiences and cobots.

Speech recognition technology helps improve the customer service experience in the telecom industry

Speech AI can help call centers make significant improvements, but there are still some challenges to successfully implementing speech-to-text, including speech ambiguity, different speaking styles, noisy environments, limitations of telephony, domain-specific vocabulary, and more. For example, "on a cruise ship" or "on a tanker"? Such words that sound the same but have different meanings can cause phonetic ambiguity. If a speech-to-text app isn't trained to recognize words in context, it can lead to transcription errors.

T-Mobile found a solution to the speech recognition problem. The solution uses NVIDIA Riva, a GPU-accelerated SDK for building and deploying custom voice applications, and NVIDIA NeMo, which fine-tunes domain-specific data. T-Mobile improves speech recognition accuracy by 3x under distractions such as different accents, different speaking styles, and noisy production environments.
