The crested ibis, along with pandas, antelopes and golden snub-nosed monkeys, is known as the four national treasures. Zhejiang is the historical distribution area of the crested ibis, and the crested ibis specimens collected in Ningbo and Ruian in the 1950s are still displayed in museums of Shanghai Normal University and other units. In 2008, Zhejiang imported 10 crested ibises from Shaanxi and began artificial ex-situ protection and reconstruction of wild populations in Zhejiang at Xiazhu Lake in Deqing.

Today, the captive population of crested ibises is expanding, and in 2014, 33 crested ibises were released for the first time, and the survival rate in the wild was as high as 96.97%.

Wild South China tiger populations continued to decline in the 1990s. In 2000, there were reports of the discovery of South China tigers in the wild in Zhejiang, and then there was no evidence of wild populations in many investigations, and the surviving South China tigers in the world are all captive individuals.

In 2014, Hangzhou Wildlife World introduced four South China tigers for the first time from Shanghai Zoo and Nanchang Zoo, and successfully bred the first South China tiger (1) in Zhejiang in 2015.

Crocodile species endemic to China

The Yangtze crocodile is the most endangered of the 23 crocodile species in the world today and is most threatened by its survival.

In order to save the Yangtze crocodile, in 1979, Zhejiang established the "Changxing Yinjiabian Yangzi Crocodile Conservation Area", based on the protection of only 11 adult Yangzi crocodiles, after years of efforts, successfully realized artificial breeding, wild release, wild population reconstruction.

In the 1960s, the population in Lin'an was less than 40. In order to save the sika deer in South China, Zhejiang established the Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve in 1985. Through the protection of wild populations and habitats, the activity area of the sika deer in South China has been expanding, and the population has rebounded.

In 2004, 20 individual Chinese crested terns were found in the Xiangshan Lishan Archipelago, and since then, the conservation research of the Chinese crested tern in Zhejiang Province has begun. With the unremitting efforts of researchers, the population of Chinese crested terns has rebounded year by year, and the number of breeding individuals has reached 52, with a total population of about 100.

The Zhenhai Axorupter was first discovered in 1932 in Chengwan, Zhenhai, Zhejiang. The Zhenhai Echinaceae is slow in action and has weak migration ability, mainly distributed in the Ruiyan Scenic Area of Jiufeng Mountain in Beilun, with a total distribution area of about 3,000 hectares. The species is extremely rare in the wild, with only 50 in the 1990s. After that, Zhejiang carried out a series of conservation work, and successively released captive young salamanders.
