Zhejiang has 29 key rare and endangered species (classes), including 17 species (classes) of plants and 12 species (classes) of animals, since the implementation of the "Action Plan for the Rescue and Protection of Rare and Endangered Wild Animals and Plants in Zhejiang Province (2017-2020)", the number of populations has been expanded, the degree of endangerment of species has been effectively alleviated, and breakthroughs have been made in the rescue and protection of rare and endangered wild animals and plants.

Crested ibis
A rare and endangered bird in the world
Protected animals at the national level
The crested ibis, along with pandas, antelopes and golden snub-nosed monkeys, is known as the four national treasures. Zhejiang is the historical distribution area of the crested ibis, and the crested ibis specimens collected in Ningbo and Ruian in the 1950s are still displayed in museums of Shanghai Normal University and other units. In 2008, Zhejiang imported 10 crested ibises from Shaanxi and began artificial ex-situ protection and reconstruction of wild populations in Zhejiang at Xiazhu Lake in Deqing.
Today, the captive population of crested ibises is expanding, and in 2014, 33 crested ibises were released for the first time, and the survival rate in the wild was as high as 96.97%.

South China Tiger
China has a unique tiger species
Wild South China tiger populations continued to decline in the 1990s. In 2000, there were reports of the discovery of South China tigers in the wild in Zhejiang, and then there was no evidence of wild populations in many investigations, and the surviving South China tigers in the world are all captive individuals.
In 2014, Hangzhou Wildlife World introduced four South China tigers for the first time from Shanghai Zoo and Nanchang Zoo, and successfully bred the first South China tiger (1) in Zhejiang in 2015.

Alligator
Crocodile species endemic to China
The Yangtze crocodile is the most endangered of the 23 crocodile species in the world today and is most threatened by its survival.
In order to save the Yangtze crocodile, in 1979, Zhejiang established the "Changxing Yinjiabian Yangzi Crocodile Conservation Area", based on the protection of only 11 adult Yangzi crocodiles, after years of efforts, successfully realized artificial breeding, wild release, wild population reconstruction.

South China sika deer
The South China sika deer is the most endangered species in the subspecies of the extant sika deer. At present, there are two populations, one of which lives in the Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve in Lin'an.
In the 1960s, the population in Lin'an was less than 40. In order to save the sika deer in South China, Zhejiang established the Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve in 1985. Through the protection of wild populations and habitats, the activity area of the sika deer in South China has been expanding, and the population has rebounded.

Chinese crested tern

It is estimated that the global population of the bird is less than 50. In 2004, 20 individual Chinese crested terns were found in the Xiangshan Lishan Archipelago, and since then, the conservation research of the Chinese crested tern in Zhejiang Province has begun. With the unremitting efforts of researchers, the population of Chinese crested terns has rebounded year by year, and the number of breeding individuals has reached 52, with a total population of about 100.

Zhoushan is currently the main distribution area of Chinese roe deer, and in 2010 it was awarded the title of "Hometown of Chinese Roe deer" by the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
Due to habitat fragmentation, the distribution of roe deer has a "islandization" trend, in order to solve the problem of degradation of its germplasm resources, in 2009 Zhejiang established a wild roe deer breeding base, in 2015 for the first time to implement the wild release of roe deer.

In 1981, zhejiang first discovered the species in WuyanLing, Taishun. Wuyanling National Nature Reserve is the highest population density area known for wild yellow-bellied horned pheasants in China, and is also the only breeding base in China's Yellow-bellied Horned Pheasant Special Conservation Area. In 2015, artificial breeding research was carried out, and 9 animals were successfully bred that year.

The Hainan flounder is one of the 30 most endangered species of birds in the world. The distribution of the Hainan flounder in Zhejiang only indicates that it has been recorded in Hangzhou and Lin'an.
Since the discovery of the breeding of Hainan flounder in 2004, there have been breeding records in Chun'an Qiandao Lake until 2015. In 2014, 6 breeding nests of Hainan seabream were found in Qiandao Lake, and the number of birds was 35.

A rare species endemic to China
Anji salamander was found in 1990 at an altitude of 1300m in Longwangshan Nature Reserve in Anji County, with a small population and a narrow distribution area, and the currently known distribution area is limited to Anji Longwangshan Nature Reserve, Tianmushan National Nature Reserve, Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve and the adjacent Qingliangfeng Nature Reserve in Anhui, of which Anji Longwangshan Nature Reserve is its concentrated distribution area.

Zhenhai echinaceae is a typical remnant taxon of the salamander family, with 2 extant species, distributed in Zhenhai, China and the Ryukyu Islands of Japan.
The Zhenhai Axorupter was first discovered in 1932 in Chengwan, Zhenhai, Zhejiang. The Zhenhai Echinaceae is slow in action and has weak migration ability, mainly distributed in the Ruiyan Scenic Area of Jiufeng Mountain in Beilun, with a total distribution area of about 3,000 hectares. The species is extremely rare in the wild, with only 50 in the 1990s. After that, Zhejiang carried out a series of conservation work, and successively released captive young salamanders.
Yiwu salamander
Endemic to Zhejiang
Yiwu salamander is named after the type specimen produced in Yiwu, Zhejiang, in Yiwu, Zhenhai, Xiaoshan, Pujiang, Wenling, Jiangshan, but in recent years due to habitat shrinkage, the population is small.

Pangolins are mainly distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Yunnan, Anhui, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei, Fujian, Taiwan and Hainan in China, and were once a widely distributed species with large resources. However, due to its great edible value and medicinal value, it has been indiscriminately hunted. According to records, around the 1960s, the national pangolin catch was 150,000 to 160,000, and rampant illegal hunting led to a sharp decline in resource reserves.

Leopards
Leopard
The results of the National Wildlife Resources Survey from 1995 to 2000 showed that leopards were distributed in Chun'an, Lin'an, Shengzhou, Zhuji, Kaihua, Longquan, Qingtian and Suichang, with a total population of 59 leopards. Due to habitat area retreat, deterioration in environmental quality, lack of food and poaching, leopard populations have declined dramatically and wild populations are difficult to see.
Clouded leopard
In the 1970s, Zhejiang was an important distribution area for clouded leopards. Due to the destruction of forests, its population is fragmented and wantonly hunted, and the habitat of the clouded leopard is reduced, the number is drastically reduced, and the wild population is difficult to see.
