Born in 1968, Liu Nankui is 53 years old and is a legend of the Korean table tennis generation. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Liu Nankui won the men's singles gold medal. In addition, Liu Nankui also won the men's singles championship at the 1986 Asian Games, and Liu Nankui was also the mixed doubles champion of the 1989 World Table Tennis Championships (partner Xuan Jinghe). In the men's doubles competitions of the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games, Liu Nankui won bronze medals with Ahn Jae-hyung, Kim Taek-so and Lee Seung-chul respectively. In 1999, Liu Nankui retired. Liu Nam-kyu has served as the coach of the Korean men's and women's teams.

Liu Nankui's wife is a bag designer, and the two married in 2007.
