In the wuhou ancestral hall in the southern suburbs of Chengdu, there is a magnificent Liu Bei Hall, which is inhabited by a gold statue of Liu Bei, and on the left side is not his son Liu Chan, but his grandson Liu Chen.
The reason is that liu chan is faint and unable to keep the foundation, and his statue was destroyed several times in the Song and Ming dynasties, and it was not re-molded. As for Liu Chen, people believe that he was heroically martyred and was a filial son of the Liu family. Therefore, he was entitled to enjoy sacrifices by Liu Bei's side.
According to the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms, Liu Chan had seven sons, the eldest of whom, Liu Xuan, was killed during the Zhonghui Rebellion, and the third son, Liu Xuan, fell ill and died. After Deng Ai reached Chengdu, when Liu Chan led the sons of the harem and the hundred officials of Wenwu to surrender, only the fifth son, Liu Chen, was furious and said: "If the reason is poor and weak, the disaster will be defeated, and the father and son will fight against the city, and die together, so as to see the former emperor Keye." (Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Shu III, Later Biography)"
Liu Chen believed that even if the enemy hit the door, the father and son should fight with their backs to the city, and only when they died in battle could they have the face to see the former emperor. It is a pity that the Lord did not adopt him. In order to show his determination to die, Liu Chen, who was crowned the king of the Northern Lands, made a surprising move.
"On that day, the king of the Northlands, who had injured the country, killed his wife first, and then committed suicide." (Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Shu III, Later Biography)
Pei Songzhi's remarks also record this incident.
Han Jin Spring and Autumn: The later lord will be the strategy of the Zhou Dynasty, and the king of the Northern Lands will be angry... On that day, he wept in the temple of Zhao Lie, first killing his wife, and then committing suicide, and all those who wept left and right were weeping.
He went to Liu Bei's temple to weep bitterly, then killed his wife and children first, and finally committed suicide. There is no one left or right who does not shed tears for it.
Among Liu Bei's grandsons, he is the most backbone.
For this history, the book records that Liu Chen, the king of the Northern Lands, heard that he was furious and brought a sword into the palace. His wife, Lady Cui, asked, "The king is unusually colored today, why not?" Chen Yue: "Wei Bing is approaching, the father has paid the reduction, tomorrow the monarch will surrender, and the society will be destroyed from then on." I want to die first to see the emperor on the ground, and not to bend my knees to others! Lady Choi said, "Hyun-jae! Wow! Die for it! The concubine please die first, and the king dies before it is too late. Chen: "Why did you die?" Lady Cui said: "The king died of his father, and his concubine died of his husband: his righteousness is the same." If the husband dies and his wife dies, why ask! "Words, touching the pillar and dying." Chen Nai committed suicide against his third son, cut off his wife's head, and brought it to the Zhaolie Temple, crying on the ground: "The subject is ashamed to see that Jiye has abandoned others, so he first kills his wife, in order to never worry about it, and then repays his ancestors with his life!" If the ancestor has a spirit, he knows the heart of the grandson! "Crying, bleeding from his eyes, he killed himself. The People of Shu heard it and mourned. Later generations have a poem praising: "The monarch is willing to bend his knees, and the son is alone in sorrow." Go to Nishikawa, King of the North! Sacrifice yourself to reward the ancestors, scratch your head and weep in the firmament. If the people are as cold as they are, who is dead? "When the Lord heard that the king of the North had killed himself, he was buried.
But now there is another evaluation of Liu Chen's death.
It is said that tiger poison does not yet eat children, Liu Chen and his wife will die when they die, why should they pull a few innocent flesh and bones as cushions? Although Liu Chen said in his weeping sacrifice, "The subject is ashamed to see that jiye has abandoned others, so he killed his wife first, and has stopped thinking of it." "It is even said that the Western Shu has perished, and the family will also be ashamed of it, so they will all be killed together, so that there is no concern for them."
But such loyalty is terrible. Maybe it's just because in ancient times there was no human word, nor did it pay attention to people-oriented, human life can be as worthless as grass mustard. We can't help but ask, does the child agree to die?
