Zhang Side, born in 1915 to a poor peasant family in Yilong County, Sichuan Province, joined the Red Army in 1933 and joined the Communist Youth League of China in the same year. In 1935, he participated in the Long March with the Red Fourth Front. After arriving in northern Shaanxi in 1936, he entered the Yunyang Honorary Military School to study and recuperate. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1937. In the spring of 1938, he was transferred to a guard battalion of a certain unit of the Eighth Route Army in Yunyang as a squad leader.
