Douban Diaries: Alfred Hitchcock | the dark side of genius

On March 7, 1979, the entrance to the Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, was bustling with people. This evening, the American Film Institute (AFI) is about to present its 7th Annual Lifetime Achievement Award. Naturally, the event attracted countless Hollywood stars, and the hotel was surrounded by the screams and cheers of fans who came to the scene. In the face of such a special honor, the recipient of the night was hiding in the hotel suite to rest, despite the dissuasion of the staff to drink champagne.

Sir Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense in the eyes of the people, has resisted the arrangement of the organizers of the conference. Hitchcock, whose health was in poor health, had not seen a new work in years, and he saw the night as his memorial service, but he did not want to be "put to the conclusion" of this.

Hitchcock was born into a Catholic family in London. As a young man, he was a taciturn little fat man, always alone, preferring to hide in a corner alone to observe others, or to study maps and train schedules by himself. And his father's discipline of little Hitchcock was also very strict.

After becoming famous, Hitchcock told this indisputable story many times: when he was 5 or 6 years old, his father asked the local police to send him to a detention cell for 5 minutes in order to punish Hitchcock. This has always left him with a lingering feeling for the police station. Regardless of the truth, Hitchcock's oral "experience", which can neither be confirmed nor denied, convinces outsiders that the sense of fear and guilt he later showed in the film originated from this.

Unexpectedly, a few years later, when the taciturn Hitchcock entered St. Ignatius College, which was known for its rigors, he gradually became a well-known "problem student" throughout the school.

This not-so-amazing-looking "little ball" is always red and smiling. He seems to have the ability to penetrate others at a glance, but others can never see through what kind of ghost ideas are being calculated in his heart.

Hitchcock liked to smash the godfather's window with stolen eggs. After being caught, he still pretended to be innocent with a helpless face. Of course, this little trick naturally couldn't satisfy his demon heart. Hitchcock once conspired with a friend to tie the lowerclassmen to an underground boiler room. They lit firecrackers to simulate explosions, leaving the poor little boy to tremble and cry alone in fear of his imminent death.

In addition to pranks, Hitchcock's greatest hobby was to go to court to observe criminal cases. He had an unusual curiosity about crime, and Hitchcock even went to the museum to observe the relics of the murderers in famous cases. He was always interested in analyzing the trajectory of the owner's life through these objects.

In early 1916, Hitchcock, who had recently lost his father, found a job at Henley. While earning money, he took time out of night school to study drawing, art history, economics and political science. At the same time, Hitchcock also began to write and became obsessed with movies. He is a frequent contributor to the company's internal publications.

Hitchcock's first published short story mimics the writing style of his favorite American writer, Edgar Poe. Although the penmanship is slightly immature, the article already has a sense of fear and suspense that he is good at expressing in the film in the future.

After World War II, Hitchcock joined a film company and began working on subtitle design. There, Hitchcock worked while learning filmmaking techniques from other staff members. Just as he began to work on his own films, he suffered a series of blows - many films were cancelled due to broken capital chains.

Thankfully, though, Hitchcock, who had never dated a girl, met the company's editor, Alma Reville. The two married in 1926, and his wife, Omar, became Hitchcock's closest collaborator.

In 1929, Hitchcock hitched a ride on sound films, and his blackmail, the first sound film directed by Hitchcock and often considered the first sound film in the history of British cinema.

Hitchcock never shied away from his preference for blondes when choosing actresses for the film. Madeleine Carroll wasn't the first blonde actress he chose, but he was "the first true Hitchcock-esque blonde beauty" in his mind. Hitchcock felt an implicit irresistible sensuality in Madeleine's haughty and cold beauty.

During the collaborative filming of Thirty-Nine Steps, Madeleine was often troubled by Hitchcock's hot and cold attitude. The director is seduced by her seductive beauty in front of the camera, but this fascination troubles himself. This ambivalence led him to vent his resentment on Madeleine. In fact, many of the blondes who later worked with Hitchcock were treated this way divisively.

Of course, Grace Kelly must be that exception. Hitchcock admits that she is the best actress she has worked with in her directing career. Grace Kelly has a calm and elegant beauty, a restrained inner passion, a flash of artistic talent from time to time, and is willing to listen to his ear.

It can be said that she should have all kinds of fantasies and needs of Hitchcock in professional and personal emotions, and for a while he even felt that he did not need other actresses. Unfortunately, Grace Kelly died out immediately after marrying into the royal family, and the cooperation between the two was soon terminated.

Of course, not everyone can have the treatment of Grace Kelly. Tippi hedren, often referred to as "Hitchcock's last blonde", was pecked by a real prop bird while filming Birds, and Tibby's "tyrannical" management methods on set with Hitchcock also broke Tibby.'s. For a time, filming was suspended. Years later, Tibby bluntly said that Hitchcock had ruined his acting career.

Hitchcock rarely talked about his private life. He tended to create for the masses the image of a well-educated middle-class gentleman with only one wife, one daughter and one hobby. Of course, this is just a personal image that he has carefully shaped and tailored. After his death, we seem to know more about him. It has to be admitted that Hitchcock's complex personality, its degree of obscurity and mystery, may be far greater than any film he shoots.
