The Swiss Federal Prosecutor said in a statement: "This money damages FIFA's assets and allows Platini to gain wealth illegally."

In January 2011, Platini sent a letter to FIFA asking for Blatter to pay him extra salary when he served as adviser to the president during his first term from 1998 to 2002.

Blatter authorized FIFA to make payments within weeks.

Blatter and Platini have always denied wrongdoing and said they verbally agreed to pay the money more than 20 years ago.

The Swiss Attorney General's Office (OAG) claims that in a written contract signed by the two of them in 1999, they agreed to pay compensation of 300,000 Swiss francs per year for Platini's consultancy.

According to the Swiss Attorney General's Office (OAG), Platini invoiced compensation each time, and FIFA paid the compensation in full.

Eight years later, Platini allegedly demanded a payment of 2 million Swiss francs. Prosecutors said the money was "without legal basis."

In addition to being charged with fraud, Blatter was accused of mismanagement, misappropriation of FIFA funds and forged documents.

Platini was charged with fraud, embezzlement, falsification of public funds and complicity in Blatter's alleged mismanagement.

Swiss prosecutors filed criminal charges against Blatter in September 2015.

Platini was formally investigated last year, and a few months later, both were charged with more serious fraud.

Blatter said in a statement: "I am optimistic about the proceedings of the Swiss Federal Criminal Court and hope that this matter will end here and that all the facts will be clarified."

He added: "On the question of FIFA's payment of 2 million francs to Platini, I can only repeat: this is based on an oral contract that regulates Platini's activities to advise FIFA between 1998 and 2002. He added.

Prattier said Platini only filed for compensation in 2010 because FIFA was unable to pay the money in full and payments were delayed.

The former FIFA president said "all responsible FIFA institutions" had approved the payment and Platini had already paid taxes on the money "in his place of residence in Switzerland".

Platini did not immediately respond to media requests for comment, but last month, his Swiss lawyer Dominic Nellen said the investigation was "long overdue."

The lawyer said the defence now asks for a variety of witnesses, adding: "There are enough witness reports and documents in the case file to prove that my client is innocent."

In Switzerland, the offence of fraud and forgery carries a maximum penalty of 5 years' imprisonment.
