The test launch is part of the Indian Navy's latest missile destroyer weapon system integration. The BrahMos missile has a long range and can hit the target precisely at a range of about 400 kilometers.

"The successful test firing of the extended-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the Visakhapatnam represents a double achievement. First of all, it proves the accuracy of the ship's combat systems and weapons equipment. Secondly, it validates the new capabilities that the Brah Mos missile offers to the Navy and the state," the Indian Navy said. The Indian Navy also called the test launch a "historic day" for India.

The Indian Navy said the test bodes well for the self-reliant India program and provides a shot in the arm for the Navy.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who was being treated at an army hospital in Delhi for contracting the coronavirus, said the successful launch once again confirmed "the robustness of the Indian Navy's mission preparations".

The BrahMos missile was developed by Brah Mos Aerospace, a joint venture established in 1998 by the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM) of Russia's Chelomei Design Agency.

BrahMos Aerospace is developing a hypersonic version of the missile with a range of up to 1500 kilometers.

In December 2021, the Brah Morris missile reportedly reached an important milestone. India's Ministry of Defence said at the time that it approved mass production of the Air Force version of the Brah Mos missile in India, which would also be equipped with the Indian Navy's P15B guided-missile destroyer.
