Kyodo also claimed that the EU is deepening its engagement with the Indo-Pacific region and strengthening its economic ties with Taiwan in the near future.

The term "free and open" appears to have become a "code" for some countries to express concerns about China's growing economic, diplomatic and military presence. The European Union has previously issued an "Indo-Pacific strategy" claiming to strengthen economic ties with Taiwan.
