Zhang Ge, vice president of New Oriental: After the epidemic, there is competition between online and offline education and more cooperation

Zhang Ge, Vice President of New Oriental Education Technology Group, at the 2020 China Headquarters Economic International Summit Forum

"After experiencing this epidemic, it is not easy to survive"

At the 2020 Service Trade Fair Education Special Exhibition, the exhibition area of New Oriental Education Technology Group focused on the self-developed "Cloud Classroom" system, which has a strong interactive teaching function design, which teachers can use to create lively and interesting classrooms.

"At this service trade fair, New Oriental demonstrated the phased results of the omo model." Zhang Ge said that for public schools and training institutions, online education is a good attempt, providing more space for exploration, and the omo model will become normalized.

Zhang Ge introduced that because many foreign teachers are in foreign countries next to foreign teachers (a brand of New Oriental), New Oriental originally developed a "cloud classroom" system to meet the online teaching of foreign teachers. The outbreak of the epidemic has rapidly upgraded the initial exploration of this system to a phased result, and millions of students have all moved online at once.

"If you use Teacher Yu's words, this epidemic test, we are 'passed', there is still a distance from excellence." Zhang Ge explained that this is because New Oriental has put forward higher requirements for itself, on the other hand, the reason why it is "passed" is because the epidemic has come too suddenly and the preparation is relatively insufficient.

"But compared with most offline institutions, New Oriental grabbed its own life-saving straw, and we survived." Zhang Ge said that after experiencing this epidemic, it is not easy to survive. In the process of normalization of epidemic prevention and control, New Oriental explores the omo model in order to make products closer to customers and more adapt to the current new normal.

"Offline teaching cannot be completely replaced by online"

Under the normalization of epidemic prevention and control, New Oriental's product settings are also changing.

Zhang Ge mentioned that during the epidemic period, New Oriental shifted from offline to online, and after the recovery of offline classrooms, some parents and students may not be willing to return to the line, and for this part of the customer, New Oriental continues to use the online teaching method, which puts forward higher requirements for teachers, products and technologies.

For example, how do you make a lesson fun when the teacher can't teach face-to-face? Online teaching can use the method of tipping to give small gifts to children. "Although it is virtual, this is something that the original ground teaching could not achieve." Zhang Ge said.

Specific to the investment in research and development, Zhang Ge introduced that New Oriental's investment in IT is increasing year by year. He believes that scientific and technological progress has made life more convenient. For large cities, the main battlefield of ground training institutions, the biggest pain point is to seize user time. If online teaching can be implemented at home, users can reduce the time spent connecting between the road and the course, which not only improves learning efficiency, but also enhances learning effectiveness. At the same time, there is also more time for children to exercise and participate in family life, "I think it may change the entire education ecology, especially the extracurricular education ecology." ”

Zhang Ge also mentioned that 5G will make earth-shaking changes in the education ecology, which can improve the average level of quality education for Chinese citizens, especially in poor areas.

"In the education poverty alleviation, New Oriental will use the network, especially the 5G force, to popularize high-quality educational resources to poor areas and education backward areas." Zhang Ge said that technologies such as AI, AR and VR make the education scene more full of fantasy.

Zhang Ge believes that in the face of the huge education and training market, there is no competitive relationship between online and offline, but cooperation. "But I also firmly believe that offline teaching cannot be completely replaced by online teaching." Zhang Ge said that everyone makes good use of their own teaching scenarios, gives full play to their own teaching expertise, and believes that each enterprise will have better development.
