Master of the Republic of China: Zeng Zhao

Zeng Zhaozhuo was a descendant of zeng guofan, a famous minister in the late Qing dynasty. He is taciturn, usually rarely communicates with people, but concentrates on learning, sometimes to the point of fascination. Although he studied at the American Church School in Changsha since he was a teenager, and he was born in Tsinghua university and studied in the United States, he was very different from other scholars who studied in the East and the West. Generally speaking, students who stay in foreign countries are always dressed in suits and shoes, and their hair is combed and shiny. However, Zeng Zhaozhuo did the opposite, and had a strong "celebrity" atmosphere of a Chinese rural school teacher in dressing. Most of what he wore was a blue cloth coat, which to outsiders always crumpled and did not fit well, and the soil was rustic, and sometimes the 3rd button had to be buttoned to the 2nd buttonhole. His face didn't seem to be very clean, his hair was untidy, and his beard didn't shave for days, like a small merchant selling fritters roaming the streets. Shoes are always a pair of blue or black cloth shoes, and the shoes have holes in the front and back, which is equivalent to later plastic slippers or sandals, and can only be walked on. The front of the socks in the shoes is always broken by the toes and not repaired, just like the ancient wandering monk Jigong who exposed his toes in front of the shoes and exposed his socks or even heels on the back. This dress, teachers and students have seen more and become accustomed to it, and every time they see it on the road, they just quietly grunt "unprecedented" and laugh it.

In 1931, Zeng Zhaoli was invited by Jiang Menglin, president of Peking University, to become a professor and director of the Department of Chemistry at Peking University. The "three fires" that Zeng Zhaozhuo put on after he took up his post at Peking University were to add equipment, buy medicines, and expand laboratories. He worked hard for the subject, like a mom to her own child. In our country, the laboratory was moved to the university, and it is said that he was the first. On this basis, Zeng Zhaozhuo displayed all the tricks he had learned abroad for many years, and gave them into play with genius, and made a thorough innovation in various affairs, so that the Department of Chemistry of Peking University, whether talented or equipped, became the strongest department in the national industry, and was attracted by the attention and praise of the national education and education circles.

Zeng Zhao's selfless spirit of dedication to the cause of science was deeply admired by teachers and students. Once he led the students to do an explosives experiment, and before the explosion, he made a careful inspection and asked the students to leave the test site first, and he personally lit the wires and still observed there carefully. At that time, a student saw the smoke coming out and shouted, "Mr. Zeng, leave quickly!" He had just left, and not long after he had stepped out, the explosives had successfully exploded. The students present were all sweating for Mr. Zeng.

In 1985, In order to commemorate Professor Zeng Zhaoli, Wuhan University allocated special funds to establish the Zeng Zhaoli Scholarship to reward graduate students who achieved excellent results in the school.
