At about 8:00 p.m. on February 18, 1979, the reserve command post of the 121st Division of the 41st Army of the Guangzhou Military Region and the 3rd Battalion of the 362nd Regiment, under the leadership of Deputy Division Commander Li Derui and Deputy Political Commissar Ding Wenkui, entered the Nahuang area about 7 kilometers east of Ton Nong County, Gao Binh Province, Vietnam. A platoon of the division guard company defending the safety of the pre-referencing found 2 people wearing Vietnamese uniforms, wearing Vietnamese ranks, and holding submachine guns, and the soldiers rushed up and twisted to ask questions, only to learn that they were scouts of the reconnaissance brigade of the 123rd Division. When the two scouts learned that the troops were going to the Ban Trang area, they immediately told them that you had taken the wrong road, and that in front of you was Ha An (Ban Tau was south of Tongnong, and Ha An was east of Tongnong).
Deputy Division Commander Li Derui went to the front to see that he had reached the banks of the Bama River, and came back to deputy political commissar Ding Wenkui and said: We must return. Deputy Political Commissar Ding said that if it is not far away, it is not enough to cross the river directly and go south, so why return? Deputy Division Commander Li said: No, the river is waist-deep, if the enemy has a machine gun, won't everyone make dumplings? So the two commanders decided to return to Tongnong, with the 8th and 9th companies as the vanguard, and the 7th company was broken. As soon as we turned back, trouble came, and hundreds of militiamen came along.
It turned out that the division's logistics front echelon led by Yin Qingjia, deputy director of the division's logistics department, also took the wrong road in Tongnong and walked to the east, and as a result, it met with the division's foreshadowing. Due to the darkness, it was difficult to adjust the organization, the troops and the militia were mixed together, and the troops were chaotically advancing to Tongnong to the west. At about 22:00, when the 8th Company, 9th Company, and Division Of the 362nd Regiment's 3rd Battalion passed through the northwestern mountain pass of Kuituo, the division's logistics front echelon was suddenly attacked by Vietnamese fire on both sides of the mountain pass. At that time, the night was dark, the troops were in the middle of the stone mountain canyon, the terrain was very unfavorable, the Vietnamese agents who were mixed into the marching army column heard the gunshots on the mountain, and also took the opportunity to make trouble, shouting and shouting while shooting and dropping bombs, and the troops suddenly fell into chaos and lost control.
The division's forewethers and the 2 companies of the 3rd Battalion moved faster, rushed out of the enemy fire blockade area, and arrived at Nating at 1 o'clock on the 19th. Due to the heavy load and poor military quality of the division's logistics front echelon, it was also in the main attack area of the Vietnamese firepower, and Yin Qingjia, deputy director of the division's logistics department who led the team, was killed immediately, and the team completely lost command. Sun Fuchen, the president of the division hospital, was a veteran who joined the army in 1946 and had experience in fighting, so he stepped forward and led everyone to break through. Wang Zhendian, the director of a hospital, was injured by a grenade and could not walk, and Zhao Dequan and several other doctors took turns running on his back. Director Wang was arrested by the Kuomintang in 1948 and liberated by our army in 1949, and he was one of the third batch of cadres scheduled to be transferred before the war. Because of the needs of the battle, it was decided that he would go to the front, and when the leader asked him for his opinion, he replied loudly: "I didn't say it, I have an unshirkable responsibility!" ”
When ambushed, many people were injured, Director Wang decisively organized personnel to rescue the wounded, organized migrant workers to pick up stretchers, and just on the way back, a grenade exploded next to him, and the shrapnel exploded on his left leg, seriously injuring him. Dr. Zhao Dequan carried him on his back for a while, and Dr. Zhao was also very tired, and Huang Hua and several other comrades-in-arms took turns carrying him. Because Director Wang's left thigh femoral artery was blown off, the blood flowed like a flood, and at that time, he lost his medical equipment, and only used a military belt to tie him, which could not completely stop the bleeding, and Director Wang finally died gloriously because of excessive blood loss.
One of the doctors was stunned by the grenade, and the pistol in his hand was shaken out of his hand and flew out, and he lay on the ground confused. There was an enemy, probably an agent, who was also wounded lying not far from him. The agent's hand touched his pistol, so he grabbed the gun belt and pulled it back, pulling the doctor awake, and when he saw that it was the enemy, he wanted to pounce on it, but it was too late, and the gun was already in the hands of the enemy. As soon as the enemy pulled the trigger, the gun rang out, fortunately only his index finger was broken, but it did not hurt his vital point, and the other comrades heard the gunshot and rushed over to kill the guy.
Before rescuing Director Wang Zhendian, Dr. Zhao Dequan first lay on the highway, and then climbed towards the mountain on the side, and just two minutes after leaving, the explosion of a grenade sounded in the place where he was lying just now. He continued to climb up the hill and found a cave, and was about to approach it, when suddenly a cry came from inside and asked, "Who is it?" Dr. Zhao quickly replied, "Don't shoot, I'm Zhao Dequan, a military doctor." In this way, he and his comrades hid in the cave until dawn, and when the sound of gunfire disappeared, they came down the hill, only to see that the road was full of corpses and wounded, as well as scattered materials... The scene was a mess and unbearable to watch.
The 121st Division suffered heavy losses at the mouth of the Kui Phu Mountain Pass, causing heavy casualties and the loss of medical supplies carried. On the 19th, the surviving personnel gathered in Tongnong, searched for medical supplies and some food of the Vietnamese army in Tongnong, and carried out local rescue of the wounded. (The entire team suffered more than 300 casualties, including 116 troops and more than 200 militiamen.)
