Lettuce is a perennial herb. Rhizomes are transverse, with leaves and creeping branches, and creeping branches are rooted. The leaves alternate on the rhizomes and creeping branches; the petiole is 25–40 cm long; the leaves are floating on the surface of the water, oval oblong, 5–16 cm long and 3–10 cm wide, full margin, green above, green with purple underneath, radial veins, hairy upper veins, and wrinkled veins at the time veins.
