"The Indifferent Man": If you are raped by life, do you fight up or lie flat and pretend to enjoy

Text/Psychological Counselor Garland

The great wheel of the times rolls in, and the clouds of fate seem irresistible...

As europe's first existentialist novel, "The Indifferent Man" seems to show us the fate and life of the two sisters and brothers who are cold, powerless, and unable to change.

"The Indifferent Man": If you are raped by life, do you fight up or lie flat and pretend to enjoy

Older sister Carla and younger brother Michelet live in a mansion in the city center, and their widowed mother has a 15-year-old lover, Leo.

Leo often came and went to the mansion to eat and socialize with them.

Although Carla has just turned 24, she is tired of her current life.

She was so tired of her mother's self-righteousness and stupidity that every time she saw the ridiculous picture of her mother flattering, pampering, complaining, and fighting for the wind in front of her lover Leo, she wanted to tell her mother: Your lover has already annoyed you, and he covets your daughter, not the friend Lisa you think you think you are!

She wanted to break free of her suffocating family and start a new life. But where is the new life? The man who could plunge her into pure love was also untraceable. Can she really find someone who is true to her?

Faced with the promises and entanglements of her mother's lover Leo, she was humiliated and helpless.

Living in such a deformed and vulgar family, she has long been emotionally numb. She didn't know what true love looked like, and her mother had raised her only because her young and beautiful daughter was more profitable, and if Leo could really help her live a new life and be truly good to her, what was the harm in dedicating herself to him?

She knew that Leo was Lisa's former fiancé, her mother's now lover, and was trying to take over her and her family's mansion, but he also had real estate and investments of his own, and he was famous and very sophisticated, and she needed a man who could protect herself and her family.

She is desperate to say goodbye to the past and start a new life, full of self-willed destructive desires, she fears betrayal of her mother, and she wants to create scandal revenge and self-destruction.

In this tangled, contradictory, neurotic emptiness, she dedicated herself to her mother's lover and began a life of self-indulgence.

"The Indifferent Man": If you are raped by life, do you fight up or lie flat and pretend to enjoy

Michelet is another victim of this upper-class family, cold, insensitive, lacking in faith, passionless, and inactive, he can only indulge in fantasies and live a life of muddled nightmares.

He knew his mother's relationship with Leo's lover, and he knew that his mother's friend Lisa wanted to seduce him, and he knew even more that Leo coveted and possessed his sister, and he felt that he should not be so numb, they could sell the mansion to pay off Leo's arrears and live an ordinary life, but his mother and sister, who had become accustomed to the upper class, would only think he was childish and ridiculous.

He wanted to put on a mask and pretend, to be as hypocritical as the people around him, but he hated it all from the bottom of his heart.

He finally made up his mind to kill Leo, the cunning and unscrupulous bastard who coveted his mansion and occupied his mother and sister, so that he could prove himself to be a passionate and actionable man. But he bought a gun but did not load it, not only did he not even hurt Leo's hair, but he was also buckled on the sofa by the other party.

What is even more ridiculous is that the reason why he prevented his sister from agreeing to Leo's marriage proposal was not for the sake of her sister's freedom and happiness, but simply because he wanted to alleviate his guilt, he had fantasized about personally giving his sister to Leo so that he could have a lot of money and a good job.

The Carla and Michelet siblings who want to change end up changing nothing, and it turns out that everyone is guilty, not only the hypocritical and selfish mother and Leo, but also themselves.

Since life is like this, why not lie flat and accept it?

Once again, the siblings fell into indifference, numbness, hypocrisy, selfishness, and depression.

"The Indifferent Man": If you are raped by life, do you fight up or lie flat and pretend to enjoy

"The Indifferent Man" ruthlessly tears off the beautiful veil that covers the faces of the bourgeoisie, revealing their ugly essence, spiritual emptiness, indifference and selfishness, hypocrisy and vulgarity.

This work was conceived by Moravia at the age of 16 at the Sun Therapy Hospital. At that time, he had to stay in bed for a long time due to bone tuberculosis, and the solar therapy that would benefit his recovery required him to be naked, wear sunglasses, cover his secrets with only bed sheets, and lie on the balcony of his ward every day to bask in the sun. Regardless of cold and heat, winter or summer.

Unable to move every day, I can only imagine that this is not another kind of rape by life. It was at this time that "The Indifferent Man" was drafted, and it was not until Moravia was 21 years old that it was finally drafted.

From the age of 8 to 18, Moravia was ill, but he did not resent, on the contrary, he thought that if he did not get sick and did not stay in bed for ten years, he would never become a writer.

As Moravian's first work, The Indifferent Man had the same rough fate as its author, and was rejected for publication because of its inconsistent content with fascist propaganda.

After several self-funded publications, it was suppressed by the authorities and even listed as a banned book by the authorities for exposing the ugly face of the bourgeoisie, but the critics and the vast majority of readers greatly appreciated the social significance and artistic value of this novel.

As soon as "The Indifferent Man" was sold out, a second and third edition was issued, and since then, this Masterpiece of Italian Literature has been reprinted almost every few years, and its popularity can be imagined, and it was later adapted to the screen for film and television series.

"The Indifferent Man": If you are raped by life, do you fight up or lie flat and pretend to enjoy

"The Indifferent Man" is about family tragedies and emotional life, reflecting people's boredom with ordinary life, conveying the pain of lack of action and the search for true feelings.

Indifference, impotence, lack of action, drifting, and melancholy are not only the emotions conveyed in the book, but also the mental symptoms of modern people.

However, in the face of fate, not everyone is as cold, powerless and sinking as Carla and Michelet's brothers and sisters, and they can also be as vigorous and vigorous as the author Moravia.
