The abandoned Staffordshire Bull Terrier transformed into a detonator dog and was involved in the protection of Prince Philip's funeral

According to the British "Mirror" reported on June 1, 5-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier Roxy was once a dog abandoned by its owner, after years of training, it has now become a professional detonation police dog, successfully completed the princess Beatrice wedding and Prince Philip funeral protection work.

Roxy was abandoned in 2017 and later rescued by the British Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and sent to the charity's West Hatch Animal Centre in Somerset. After being taken in by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the staff discovered that Roxy had extraordinary potential and decided to raise it as a police dog. Sue Dicks, the charity's director, said: "Roxy is the right age, it's good at getting along with people and other dogs, and it's very confident. It's also very focused, and that quality is very important in training. In addition to that, it is also very decisive. ”

After years of training, Roxy eventually became a police dog, mastering the skills to detect the smell of explosives. It first received ten weeks of training at the police station, learning how to look for the smell of explosives and how to tell people where they were. It then went to Hampshire and the Thames River Basin Expert Search Department for two years, partnering with police officer Camilla Carter and finally completing its training in February 2020.

The Roxy is the only Staffordshire bull terrier in the UK that acts as a detonator dog. Today, together with its partner Carter, it is responsible for major public events and security checks before visits by important people. They cooperated in the search for suspicious packages prior to royal and ministerial visits and thoroughly inspected venues. In addition, Roxy has the ability to deal with bomb threats and search for hidden explosives in private jets.

Carter said: "Roxy is a superstar. It's smart and organized. It's just a fun game for it, and it loves how it works. I'm proud to see it at work, to see its life trajectory completely changed. I really like working with it, it's my teammate and we support each other. I'm sure it's gifted for the job. ”

Roxy is one of dozens of sniffing dogs in the England and Wales Police Force. It was always thought that only German Shepherds, Labradors and Spaniards could be police dogs, but there are also some Staffordshire Bull Terriers involved in the fight against crime.
