Guo Xiaodong: In fact, at that time, this role found me, and my biggest pressure came from the fact that Teacher Li Xuejian had already acted in a classic version, whether it was the creation of the actor or from the perspective of film art, his version was a height in the history of Chinese cinema, which was a lot of pressure for me. But I also have a great motivation, that is, I especially want to play Secretary Jiao, he is the spiritual idol of our generation, or even generations, I have always wanted to play such a positive energy, temperature, love, and responsibility in my heart, he is very compatible with the role I yearn for in my heart. From another point of view, I have been waiting for the role of Secretary Jiao Yulu for so many years.
Reporter: The staff told us that you spent nearly 6 months visiting and experiencing the place where Secretary Jiao worked and lived before his death. Few actors now have the luxury of preparing.
Guo Xiaodong: I can say this, I must use all my strength to play Jiao Yulu well, otherwise I am sorry for these three words. This kind of biographical role is very difficult to play, all his things are familiar to us, as an actor, how do you turn all the events he experiences into your own growth, into all your subconscious actions and behaviors, this is a matter of effort.
To tell the truth, I was still very nervous until I was about to start the camera, although I spent so long to experience life, but it was really too difficult, I was confused, in the end how to enter the heart of Secretary Jiao, I can only look at a large number of text materials, video materials, until the day before the start of the test shooting, the moment the lens opened, I suddenly wanted to understand!
I always tell people that I admit that I am a very stupid actor, I really don't know how to capture the state of the character in an instant, I need to penetrate, to integrate, to understand, step by step, and then to release bit by bit, I can only do this. For me, this half a year is worth it.
Reporter: I heard that you were 81 kilograms before booting, and after booting, it became 66 kilograms. We watch the movie, and you're already skinny like a changed person in the second half. It seems that in order to perform the state of water shortage, you don't drink water all day on the set.
Guo Xiaodong: There are many kinds of actors, different actors have different creative methods, I am a stupid actor, I have no way to play a very thirsty and dry state when my lips are very wet, I can't act. When I made this movie, I didn't let myself eat enough from beginning to end, and I was at most 30% full every day, and finally I reached the point where I didn't want to eat anything. When I was filming the Lankao scene, I was only 66 kilograms, and then the second sister (Jiao Shouyun) told me that you can't lose weight anymore, and everyone looked at it with pain.
We always need the spirit of Jiao Yulu
Reporter: The main theme of the movie is actually difficult to act, and I am most afraid of the hero's face. Would you figure out a way to design some action or emoticon to make the character more vivid?
Guo Xiaodong: I never thought about how to design this character, I thought about how to let myself enter his heart, become him, feel him, and have a spiritual dialogue with him, which is extremely important. I want to fully feel everything about Secretary Jiao from the inside, and then show it properly through my words and demeanor. When you really believe that you are this character, the so-called design is no longer important, to be honest, those design things are mirages, and the wind blows and disappears. What really stands and can stay is your true feelings, which is the most important thing.
Reporter: I remember you said that "My Father Jiao Yulu" is "not afraid of people watching, only afraid of people not coming to see."
Guo Xiaodong: Yes, in fact, this movie has a particularly high rating on the Internet, and people who have seen it have commented that it is particularly good. I have a friend who said that I originally thought it was a main theme movie, and everyone came to see the spiritual idol Jiao Yulu, but I didn't expect to see a wife's husband, a mother's son, a child's father, an ordinary county party secretary, and a flesh-and-blood party member in the movie. I was particularly touched by these evaluations, in fact, what do you say an actor can do for society, where is your responsibility? Guo Xiaodong: The biggest determination is that you have good works and become an irreplaceable actor. Your heart is worthy of the word "actor", and you can eat on it. I really haven't tried to promote anything for so many years, and actors can do their job well, use works, use professional speech, better than anything. At present, as long as your profession is excellent, your acting is good, and your singing is good, you will definitely become an evergreen tree. Any profession needs to speak with hard kung fu, as long as you are capable, you will not be afraid of anything, and you can withstand all kinds of so-called temptations. Guo Xiaodong: I didn't expect me to get to where I am today, I really didn't expect it. I am especially grateful to my profession, I often say that there are two things in a person's life that cannot be taken lightly, one is your origin, and the other is your dream. No one knows what your future will be, no matter how big your dreams are, no matter where you come from, as long as you are firm in your ideals, fight for it, and stride forward on the Kangzhuang Avenue, you will definitely go to the other shore.
