The benevolent rulers that Han Feizi refers to are typical standing and talking without waist pain, not understanding the facts, not thinking about problems from the level of long-term strategy, not fundamentally solving problems, only focusing on the present, and what they say is grandiose, sounding reasonable, but in fact it is the same as not saying it.
Han Feizi gave a very vivid example to illustrate the problem, the benevolent person saw the hungry man and said, "Let's go to dinner." Isn't this nonsense, hungry who doesn't know how to eat, you have to have something to eat to eat! And the people who say this are not on a dime, and they should not say such things without preparing hearty food. Han Feizi's criticism is the most convincing in the era of war and chaos, the people are not happy, hungry and dead, do not want to solve the problem, but say such a grandiose word, false compassion to the extreme.
Han Feizi said that they "cannot cut grass and produce millet and persuade loans and give rewards", and benevolent people not only do not come up with the idea of "cutting grass and growing millet" to reclaim wasteland and cultivate land to increase grain production, but also let the monarch give alms and rewards, please ask the treasury is empty, and let the monarch take what to give alms and rewards. This is obviously a full man who does not know that the hungry man is hungry.
The more serious problem is that the benevolent people regard their "persuasion to eat" remarks as the good name of "those who can live and starve", but Han Feizi directly exposed their false benevolence and reputation. Similarly, Han Feizi also gave a ruthless criticism of the benevolent people who praised the "persuasion" as a strategy of "enriching the people", directly explaining that "not for the rich people" is not a strategy for enriching the people, but a practice of coveting fame, which is not beneficial to the country and the people. Han Feizi rejected the arguments and practices of the benevolent people in both theory and practice, believing that they were vain and useless. The idea of benevolence is no longer suitable for governing the country, and can only educate and educate people, and the idea of the legal system is the fundamental strategy for governing the country.
After Han Feizi criticized the rule of the benevolent people, he made a comparison with the scholars of the world, and he believed that "the words of the scholars today are also good at the end of the matter, and they know that the hypocrisy is to speak of the people, and this persuasion is said." This means that today's scholars talk loudly, and their proposition is not to devote themselves to farming but to pursue benevolent government, and only knows to quote false saints to please the people, which is tantamount to persuading people to eat out of thin air.
This is a criticism of the scholars at that time, who were not pragmatic, did not solve the actual problems of the country, the people could not even eat, and talked about what benevolence governed the country, and could benevolence fill the stomachs of the people? Obviously not, it's like seeing someone fall into the water, not go down to save people, but teach people to swim on the shore. Different times and environments require different policies, and what Han Feizi lived in his era most needs to be solved is the problem of the people's food, that is, the food problem, which is divorced from this problem and other high-minded talk is exaggerated and vain, harming the country and misleading the country.
The benevolent person does not talk about practical and fundamental issues, but talks about benevolent government, which is obviously to please the people, first, ideological paralysis, the use of the spiritual victory method, and second, through the "loan and reward" of material pleasure, which is the use of the dark side of human nature. Imagine if the country really didn't eat, what would the result be? No matter how good the spiritual victory method is, it is more attractive than the last steamed bun. This is the harmfulness and fundamental defect of the idea of benevolence in governing the country.
Therefore, Han Feizi said, "The theory of persuasion to eat, the Lord is not affected." This means that the preaching of persuading people to eat out of thin air is not accepted by The Ming Emperor. Empty and retreating preaching will not solve the actual problems of society, but will aggravate the harm of problems and intensify contradictions. What is the "essence" of things, understand this truth, and then know the main contradiction of things, and naturally clarify the direction of action.
