Honglin Enlightenment Han Feizi - Eight Sayings Chapter 30 Ren Tyrannical Destruction of the Country
In the previous chapter of Honglin Wudao's "Han Feizi - Eight Sayings", Han Feizi discussed for us "intolerable, good, hateful, and vain." This is the other side of benevolent governance, "benevolence" is not only benevolent, but also violent, benevolent is manifested in intolerance and goodness, and violence is manifested in hatred and delusion.
Intolerance is not compassion in the traditional sense, but based on the intolerance of "etiquette" thinking, it cannot be ruthless, and its purpose is to covet good name and face the bad people who deserve it and not tolerate punishment according to law. If you can't bear the punishment, you will be forgiven and pardon, which is contrary to the basic principles of social management, nor is it in line with "human feelings", let alone the spirit of ruling the country according to law. Good and good is not a traditional sense of charity, but refers to the arbitrary sharing of rewards without standards and basis, which is the destruction of the creation and distribution system of social wealth, and the destruction of the foundation of society.
The idea of "intolerable" is a soft attack on the national policy of governing the country according to law and the core values of society, has a great social incitement and demagogy, is not conducive to social harmony and stability, it makes full use of the characteristics of human nature, likes and dislikes, starts from individual interests, and ignores collective interests. "Good and" also exploits the lazy mentality of human nature to satisfy personal greed and harm the national interest. "Intolerable" and "good" seem to be full of humanistic care, but in fact, they are a disaster for the country and the people, replacing national interests with personal interests, and there is neither a sense of the overall situation nor a sense of the overall situation. "Intolerable" and "good" can be used to educate people, but not to govern the country.
Regarding "hateful views" and "false accusations", this is a typical act of subjugation. The way to be a king lies in "hiding oneself", like the "tao", formless and formless, everywhere, omnipotent. The monarch is the creator and administrator of social platforms and state organizations, not the performers on stage. You can't show your joys and sorrows like a performer, and you can't easily show your thoughts and opinions. Otherwise, they will be used by their courtiers and robbed by their subjects. Indiscriminate killing of innocents, whether from the perspective of the people's feelings or from the perspective of ruling the country according to law, is a sign of the subjugation of the country, which is the most uncivilized manifestation of mankind, and regards life as grass.
After Han Feizi finished talking about the plague of "benevolent violence," he concluded: "Therefore, benevolent people are in power, wantonly and lightly violate the forbidden law, and secretly look up to the top; if the violent person is in power, he will act in a vain manner and obey the lord, and the people will be resentful and chaotic." This means: If a benevolent person is on the throne, his subordinates will easily break the law by acting recklessly, hoping to get the favor of the monarch with the psychology of luck; when the tyrant is on the throne, the law will be carried out in vain, the monarch will deviate from morality, and the people will complain and rebel.
Han Feizi listed the actual manifestations of "benevolent violence". The reign of the benevolent, because of its "intolerable" and "good" characteristics, will inevitably make the courtiers bend the law for personal gain, because there is no strict law and criminal law, as long as they please the monarch, they can be rewarded. The dark side of human nature will be infinitely magnified without strict legal constraints, and Han Feizi has specially discussed this point. And the tyrant is in power, the personal will overrides the law of the land, the personal atrocity replaces the criminal law, and personal preferences are imposed on others, and there is no morality. The monarchs and subjects are alienated from morality, and they cannot form a national force that is unified in ideology and unity, and the people's complaints are unbearable, and the country is in a crisis of national subjugation.
Finally, Han Feizi said, "Therefore, the benevolent tyrants are also those who have perished." Meaning: So to say: benevolence and cruelty, both can lead to the destruction of the state. Judging from Han Feizi's own thinking, he is not saying that Confucianism's benevolence and etiquette are not good, but that it is weak and insufficient at the level of governing the country. Different eras require different governing strategies, the Zhou Dynasty implemented the system of sub-feudalism, and the Confucian etiquette ideas and etiquette strategies adapted to the characteristics and needs of that era.
In the era of the Zhou Dynasty, it was like a family giving birth to dozens of children, and parents managed each child with etiquette and family law. Later, each child grew up, left his parents to develop in various places, and after the children became a family, the big family was separated, the parents became the nominal head of the family, and the children lived their own lives, and from time to time they thought of their parents and went to worship. As the children became stronger and began to fight each other, the parents' abilities gradually declined, and they could not control them. Patriarchy obviously cannot govern the world, and at this time, benevolence hinders the development and progress of society, and society urgently needs an ideology and strategy to unify the world, end the war, return the world to peace, and the Dharma comes out of the world.
[Therefore, benevolent people are in power, and they wantonly and lightly violate the forbidden law, and secretly look up to the top; if the tyrant reigns, the law is vain and the lord is obedient, and the people are resentful and chaotic.] Therefore, it is known that those who are benevolent and violent, those who have perished in the country are also. 】
When human society developed away from food collection to the era of farming and industrial civilization, and the centralized state was formed, the Confucian "benevolence" and "etiquette" were more suitable for educating and educating people, and governing the country according to law was more suitable for governing the country, which was the requirement of the times and the inevitable development of society. In the future information AI era, the idea of governing the country according to law may need to be further changed, boldly imagine that it is possible to govern the country according to "numbers", and govern the country according to the data stored in the central computer.
