On April 5, 1959, at the 25th World Table Tennis Championships in Dortmund, the 21-year-old Rong Guotuan defeated hungarian veteran Sido 3:1 to win the men's singles competition. This Chinese youth, who shouldered the trust of 40,000 million compatriots, for the first time, lifted the St. Brad's Cup, which symbolizes the highest honor of table tennis in the world, and became the first world champion in the history of New China.
The news of the victory reached the country and the whole country rejoiced. Rong Guotuan was treated like a national hero, and letters written to him from all over the country flew like snowflakes, so much so that a special "letter breaking group" was set up.
Premier Zhou Enlai even listed Rong Guotuan's victory and the tenth anniversary of the founding of New China as two happy events in 1959, and named the first production of table tennis in New China "Red Double Happiness".
