In the third hall of the Shanghai Sports Museum, there are seven silver and shiny championship trophies, all of which belong to one event, the World Table Tennis Championships, or World Table Tennis Championships for short, which was founded in 1926. It is one of the highest level world table tennis competitions sponsored by the International Table Tennis Federation, and is called the "three major events of table tennis" together with the Olympic Games and the Table Tennis World Cup. The seven trophies correspond to seven events: Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles, Men's Team, Women's Team and Mixed Doubles. Trophies are named after the donor or the name of the country. Whenever a new winner is created, the name of the winner or team will be engraved on the trophy and handed over to the company for one year, after which the trophy will be returned to the organizing committee for the next competition. Therefore, the seven trophies are constantly circulating with the competition cycle.

Wait, if the World Table Tennis Championships trophies are constantly circulating, where did the seven trophies now in the museum come from? They are actually replica trophies authorized by the Itté Tennis Federation. Although not the original, it is still a symbol of honor. Because in the trophy, the name of the national table tennis athlete who won the championship is vividly remembered. And the heroic feat of winning all seven trophies in one session has been achieved by the Chinese table tennis team so far, and more than once. They fully illustrate China's absolute strength in table tennis. Of course, the starting point of the story begins with the first time to win the World Table Tennis Championships trophy, at the same time, the birth of the first world champion of New China, and even the first Chinese sports brand to debut at the world championship.

In 1959, Rong Guotuan won the Men's Singles Championship Medal of the World Table Tennis Championships

The figure on the medal in the museum's collection is the first world champion in the history of new Chinese sports, Rong Guotuan, who holds the World Table Tennis Championships men's singles championship trophy, the St. Brede Cup. Born in Hong Kong in 1937, Yung's name "Guo Tuan" symbolizes the country's strong national unity. In September 1957, Rong Guotuan, on behalf of the Hong Kong and Macao Table Tennis United, went to Beijing to play an exhibition match with the national team, shocking the whole field with superb skills, and also attracted the attention of Marshal He Long, who was watching the game. After the game, He Long suggested that Rong Guotuan join the national team and play for the country. Two months later, Rong Guotuan entered the Guangzhou Institute of Physical Education.

In 1959, the 25th World Table Tennis Championships were held in Dortmund, Germany. At the age of 22, Rong Guotuan reached the final against The Hungarian veteran Sido, who had won nine world championships. Rong Guotuan lost the first set, but with a strong tactical foundation, he adjusted in time and won 3 consecutive sets and won the championship in one fell swoop. The St. Pride Cup was engraved with the name of Chinese for the first time, and new China produced the first sports world championship. In 1959, Premier Zhou Enlai received Rong Guotuan, who had returned with honors

At this time, Shanghai developed table tennis equipment that meets the quality requirements of the World Table Tennis Championships, and when reporting to the central government, asked Premier Zhou Enlai to give a name to the new brand. Zhou Enlai said without hesitation: "This year is the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and Rong Guotuan has won the first world championship in the mainland sports project.

Two years later, the 26th World Table Tennis Championships was held in Beijing, and "Red Double Happiness" became the first Chinese sports brand to appear at the World Championships. In the men's team final of this World Table Tennis Championships, the Chinese team met the table tennis hegemon at that time - the Japanese team that has won five consecutive championships. In the fifth game of the decider, it was rong guotuan's turn to play against Japan's famous Hoshino, and before he played, he threw off the towel and shouted: "How many fights can you have in life!" Don't beat at this time, let alone when! "Then defeated Hoshino in one fell swoop and won the team championship, which was the first time the Chinese team lifted the Swathelyn Cup." Life can have a few beats! It has also become a slogan of the times representing the spirit of Chinese sportsmanship, inspiring generations of future generations to brave strong hands and strive to forge ahead.

The collection on the left of the picture above is the gold medal of the 48th World Table Tennis Championships, and the overlapping ping-pong boards waved on the emblem form the pattern of the Shanghai flower "White Magnolia". On the right is a collection of mascot brooches, and the cute dolphin with relief on the surface is called "Welcome", which symbolizes welcome, and is also pronounced "win". The combination of the two is exactly what magnolia means to meet each other.

In May 2005, the 48th World Table Tennis Championships was held in Shanghai. At this time, it has been exactly 101 years since Chinese table tennis first appeared in Shanghai. In the past hundred years, Chinese table tennis has returned to its birthplace. The people of Shanghai burst out with all their enthusiasm to welcome friends from all over the world and cheer for all table tennis players. In the words of Sharala, then president of the International Table Tennis Federation: "I want to present a trophy to the people of Shanghai, and you have dedicated one of the most memorable events to the world!" "During the 7-day competition, the Chinese table tennis team once again staged a dream moment and won all the trophies." Shanghai's strength "Wang Liqin, this time fighting at the doorstep, showed the domineering spirit of giving up his own, in the final men's singles final, defeated teammate Ma Lin and won the men's singles championship. At the same time, it is also announced that the total number of gold medals won by the Chinese table tennis team in the World Table Tennis Championships exceeds 100!

Of course, the story about Wang Liqin will be said slowly later. Because in Shanghai, the "cradle of table tennis world champions", counting past heroes, there is a long list of names: Xu Yinsheng, Li Furong, Zheng Minzhi, Cao Yanhua, Wang Liqin... Wait, the hard work of generations has formed a monument to sportsmanship. In the next few issues, we talk slowly.
