Like a Year of Flowing Water is a 1984 Hong Kong film directed by Yan Hao and starring Gu Meihua and Si Qinggaowa. The film won six awards at the 4th Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Newcomer and Best Art Direction.
Shanshan (Gu Meihua), who has lived in Hong Kong for many years, learns that her grandmother died in the countryside and leaves to return to her hometown in Chaoshan after 20 years of absence to mourn for her grandmother, but also wants to take the opportunity to escape the troubles of the city. Compared with the fast-paced city life, Shanshan's hometown still maintains the simplicity and timelessness of memory. Shanshan reunites with childhood friends Ah Zhen (SiChenkova) and Xiao Song (Xie Weixiong), who are married and have a daughter. Ah Zhen is now the principal of a primary school in a village and is the head of the family, while Xiao Song only knows that he does not ask anything else in the field, and Ah Zhen loves her husband and daughter very much. When Ah Zhen and his wife learned of Shanshan's career and love troubles, they decided to comfort Shanshan together. However, the woman's jealousy makes Ah Zhen, while sympathizing with Shanshan, wary of Shanshan's contact with Xiaosong. Sansan's arrival shattered the otherwise uneventful rural life.
