Marco Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius (reigned 161–180 AD) was a Stoic philosopher and one of the five fine Roman emperors (reigned 161–180 AD). According to DIR Marcus Aurelius, he was born on April 26, 121 AD, and possibly On April 6 or 21. He died on March 17, 180. His Stoic philosophical writings, known as the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, were written in Greek. His son, the infamous Roman Emperor Commodus, succeeded to the throne. During the reign of Marco Aurelius, the Macmani War broke out on the northern border of the Empire. It was also the era of the important physician Galen, who wrote about a particularly deadly epidemic named after the surname Marcus Aurelius.

Marcus Aurelius, formerly known as Marcus Annius Verus, was the son of the Spaniard Annius Verus, who received the rank of nobility from Emperor Vespasian and Domitia Calvilla or Lucilla. Marcus's father died when he was three months old, when his grandfather adopted him. Later, Titus Antoninus Pius adopted Marcus Aurelius at the age of 17 or 18 as part of his agreement with Emperor Hadrian to elevate Antoninus Pius as heir.

Augustus history says that when Marcus was adopted as heir, he was first called "Aurelius" instead of "Anius". In 139 AD, Antoninus Pius appointed Marcus as consul and Caesar. In 145, Aurelius adopted his sister, Faustina, daughter of Pius. After they had daughters, he was granted the power of a conservator and an empire outside Rome. After the death of Antoninus Pius in 161, the Senate granted imperial power to Marcus Aurelius; however, Marcus Aurelius granted joint power (through adoption) to his brother and called him Lucius Aurelius Verus Commodus. The two brothers who ruled together were called Anthony — as in the plague of Anthony in 165-180. Marcus Aurelius ruled from 161 to 180 AD.

When Marcus Aurelius was preparing for the Malcolmani War (along the Danube, between the Germanic tribes and Rome), a plague broke out, killing thousands of people. Antonioni (adopted by Marcus Aurelius and his co-emperor/brothers) helped pay for the funeral. Marcus Aurelius also helped the Romans during the famine and was therefore considered a particularly benevolent rule.

Marco Aurelius died in March 180. Before his funeral, he was proclaimed a god. When his wife, Faustina, died in 176, Marcus Aurelius asked the Senate to deify her and build a temple for her. The gossipy Augustus history says that Faustina was not a chaste wife, and that Marcus Aurelius' promotion of her lover was considered a taint to her reputation.

The ashes of Marco Aurelius were placed in Hadrian's mausoleum.

Unlike the four sages before him, Marcus Aurelius's heir was his biological heir. Marco Aurelius's son was Commodus.

The Marcus Aurelius Column has a spiral staircase leading to a top, from where you can see the Anthony Funeral Monument of Matius on campus. Marcus Aurelius' German and Sarmatian battles are shown in spiraling reliefs on 100 Roman-foot-long columns.

Between 170 and 180, Marcus Aurelians wrote 12 books in Greek, which are generally insightful observations from the Stoic view considered Stoic. These are called his meditations.
