Marco Aurelius: Do what is right by nature

If you can, admonish those who do wrong, but if you can't, remember that it's better to go with the flow. The gods also take a natural approach to this; in some cases, the gods even help these people gain wealth, health, and fame; they are so kind.

This is also within your power; in other words, who will stop you from doing so?

Don't be forced to work; don't work because others are pitiful or praised. There is only one thing to do directly, that is, to reflect on oneself according to the requirements of social rationality.

I have finally come out of all my troubles today, or I can say that I have left all my troubles behind, because the troubles are not external, but in my thoughts internally.

Everything is the same, it is commonplace, it is dead in time, and it is worthless in matter. Everything in the present is completely different from the past era in which the ancestors lived.

Hordes of things are outside of us, they don't know themselves and they have no judgment about themselves.

So, what exactly is it that makes a value judgment on them?

It's rationality.

For rational social animals, good and evil are not in a negative static, but in a positive dynamic, and in this respect, just as their virtues and evil deeds are, not a negative static but a positive dynamic.

For a stone that is thrown upwards, falling is not evil, and being carried by someone is not a good either.

Dig deeper into people's guiding principles and you'll see what judgments you're afraid of, and what value that judgment is in itself.

Everything is changing; you yourself are constantly changing, in some ways even in an endless state of destruction, and so is the entire universe.

It is your duty that other people's mistakes are handled by themselves.

The end of activity, the movement, the cessation of thought, is death in some sense, and this is not evil.

Now turn your mind to your life process, your childhood, youth, middle age, old age, etc., these life process transformations can be called a kind of death. Is this something to be feared?

Instead think about your life under your grandfather's knee, then your life under your mother's knee, then your life under your father's knee. If you also find many different differences, variations and stops in it, ask yourself, is there anything terrible about it?

Well, again, the end, cessation, and change of your entire life is not something to be afraid of.

Quickly gain insight into your own dominance, the dominance of the universe, and the dominance of those around you. You can make it reasonable for your own dominance; you can remember that you are a part of it for the dominance of the universe; and for the dominance of the people around you, you can examine whether he acts intentionally or unintentionally, and whether his dominance is close to yours.

Because you are part of the social architecture yourself, you should also make your every action a part of your entire social life.

However, if your behavior is not directly or indirectly related to the common goal of society, it will make your life fragmented and unable to be unified, which is simply a rebellion against nature. It's like a person going his own way at a public meeting, completely detached from the collective opinion.

On one side are the quarrels and frolicking of children, while on the other side are weak and dying old people, and this is how the world is. What is presented to us in the mansion of the dead can make us more aware of reality.

Gain a deep insight into the formal properties of an object and observe it separately from the material content; then think about the longest time that this unique thing can last by its very nature.

If your dominance is dissatisfied with it when it is done exactly according to its innate nature, then you will be in an endless state of trouble. Hurry up and stop.

If someone condemns you or hates you, or someone is saying bad things about you, get close to their poor soul and go deep into it to see what kind of person they really are.

You will find that there is no need to be upset with these people at all, whether they have opinions and opinions of you in one way or another. But either way, you should be kind to them because they are your innate friends. The gods also help them achieve achievements that they value so much in various ways, such as dreams and signs.

The universe has the same periodic motion, from top to bottom, from one age to another. The intellect of the universe produces all sorts of different effects through its own motion, and if this is true, then you should have no complaints about its result; or it is simply picking a head, and everything else is just moving in a knock-on effect; another possibility is that the inseparable material element constitutes the root of all things.

In a word, if God exists, everything is fine; if it is an accident that rules the world, then do not let you be completely enslaved by him.

The earth will bury us all in the near future.

But the earth will continue to change, and the things that derive from it will continue to change all the time, and so on and so on will never end. For if one contemplates the constant flow of change and thinks about the fleeting nature of this change, then one will look down on all that is perishable.

The origin of the universe is like a torrent in winter, sweeping everything away. But how pitiful are the so-called politicians, who are useless and think they are playing the role of philosophers. It's all stupid.

Then, man, do what you should do according to your nature. If you have the power, hurry up and act, don't look around to see if others will notice your actions, and don't dream of Plato's ideal state.

Be satisfied with every achievement, and don't be small and good! Because, who can change people's perceptions? But how can we get rid of the state of slavery that pretends to be obedient but complains if we do not change our minds?

Tell me now about Alexander, Philip, and Thermoas of Farraran. They still need to judge whether they have experienced the nature of the universe and train themselves accordingly.

But if they act like heroes in tragedy, then no one can accuse me of following their example. Simplicity and humility are philosophical jobs. Don't lead me into laziness and arrogance.

Overlooking the world, countless crowds, and their countless rituals, and countless voyages in the midst of sometimes stormy and sometimes calm waves.

It is also useful to examine the differences between those who are born, those who live together, and those who die. Think again about the people who lived in a bygone era, the people who lived after you died, and those who now live among the barbarians.

How many people don't even know your name, and how many people will quickly forget your name, and those who may be praising you now may soon denigrate you again. Therefore, the so-called posthumous name is worthless at all, so is fame, and so is everything else.

Things outside the body are disturbed, but your heart remains free; everything is done according to inner cause and effect, so that you can remain just. In other words, it is good for society to follow this code of conduct in your words and deeds, because it is determined by your nature.

You should get rid of all the things that bother you, especially the useless things in them, which are entirely up to your own judgment; and you will thus win yourself a wider space.

As long as your mind accommodates the entire universe, understands the eternity of time, and discerns the transient changes of everything, the short process from birth to death, and the infinite time not only before birth but also after death.
