It was once a gathering place for famous teachers. Li Yueran, a senior translator in the early days of New China, Su Qi, the first generation of interpreters and simultaneous interpreters in New China, Dong Leshan, who translated many well-known works such as "1984", Guan Zhenhu, who was a translator for Premier Zhou Enlai, and other famous translation theorists Liu Miqing and Mr. Bao Gang all taught at the school.
In 2001, in order to commend the old translators who have made outstanding achievements in translation work, the China Translation Association set up the honorary title of "Senior Translator", which is not only a full affirmation of the Chinese translation community for the translators who have made outstanding contributions to China's translation cause over the years, but also a very high honor for the majority of translators. Up to now, 23 teachers of Beijing Second Foreign Chinese College have won the honorary title of "Senior Translator", which is enough to glimpse the translation strength of the school.
After decades of development, in order to meet the needs of senior translation talents in the development of China's economy, culture and other industries, the school established the Advanced Translation College in 2006, began to formally recruit undergraduate students in 2007, and began to recruit translation masters (MTI) translation majors in 2017 in 2017 to be rated as "the first batch of first-class majors in Beijing universities" (a total of 27 in the city), in 2019 was rated as "Beijing Universities Key Construction First-class Majors", and in 2020 was rated as "National First-class Major".
At present, the college has formed a talent training structure of "multilingual polyglot and inter-professional compound". At the undergraduate level, there are Chinese-English-Spanish, Chinese-English-French, Chinese-English-Russian, Chinese-English-Arabic composite language translation projects, and the experimental class project of global governance and media communication (the whole school selects students); at the graduate level, there are MTI English interpreting, MTI English translation, MTI French interpretation (Chinese, English and French polyphonic), MTI Spanish interpretation (Chinese, English and Spanish polyphony) and many directions. The faculty of the college is strong, many teachers have senior titles (including Xiangyu leading scholars, Beijing high-level talent program talents), nearly 80% of the full-time teachers have obtained doctoral degrees and are currently studying doctorates, and the teaching, scientific research and practice of the teachers of the college are equally important. He has undertaken the interpretation tasks of many foreign affairs meetings of party and state leaders, the translation of important national documents, and a number of scientific research tasks, including key projects of the National Social Science Foundation.
The goal of the translation major is to train "thoughtful translators". While improving students' language skills, cultural accomplishment and cross-cultural communication ability, it also pays attention to cultivating students' ability to absorb knowledge, think critically and innovate, analyze and solve problems, so that students can be competent in the interpretation and translation of departments such as diplomacy, foreign affairs, international cultural exchanges, and foreign cultural communication.
The College maintains close ties with the industry and is one of the initiators of the "Language Big Data Alliance". The professional teaching team has rich experience in interpreting and translation practice, and the classroom teaching fully reflects the characteristics of practical combat. In addition, the college has also invited the United Nations and its branches, foreign language bureaus, Chinese translation associations, and other industry experts to give lectures at the university for a long time. Students are encouraged to participate in various discipline competitions, and more than 80 students have won awards in discipline competitions at various levels in the past three years. In 2021, the College hosted the 33rd Han Suyin International Translation Competition.
The School has jointly built a training base for off-campus talents in Beijing with CIPG, cooperated with Alibaba Cloud to build a first-class professional and multi-lingual translation training platform, established an off-campus practical teaching base with China Foreign Translation Publishing House, the Translation Center of Beijing Foreign Affairs Office, Huawei Translation Center, China Daily, And "English World" Chinese Translation Technology Co., Ltd., and organized students to participate in various international conferences and large-scale activities of language services.
