Lu Xuan, a talented woman from Tsinghua, witnessed the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China on the castle tower at the age of 101, and her husband was Rao Shushi

On October 1, 1949, Lu Xuan stood on the tower of Tiananmen Square with Cai Chang, Deng Yingchao, Kang Keqing and others, and personally experienced the founding ceremony of New China, which attracted worldwide attention.

At this time, Lu Xuan served as the Chinese secretary of the Secretariat of the International Democratic Women's Federation, the standing committee member of the All-China Women's Federation and the director of the International Work Department.

Lu Xuan's husband, Huan Shushi, was a senior leader of our party and held a very prominent position, serving as the first secretary of the East China Bureau and the political commissar of the East China Military Region, a member of the Central People's Government, a member of the Central People's Revolutionary Military Commission, and the first secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee. Two months later, Rao Shushi concurrently served as chairman of the East China Military and Political Committee.

Among the older generation of female revolutionaries, Lu Xuan's academic qualifications are the highest.

Lu Xuan, born in 1914, is a native of Wuxing County, Zhejiang (now Wuxing District, Huzhou City). She studied at Suzhou Zhenhua Girls' School and Soochow University, and was later admitted to Tsinghua University in Beiping.

At that time, female students who could be admitted to Tsinghua University were rare.

On December 9, 1935, thousands of students of Peking University and Middle School held an anti-Japanese demonstration to save the country, opposing the autonomy of North China, resisting Japanese imperialism, demanding the preservation of The integrity of China's territory, and setting off a new upsurge of national anti-Japanese national salvation.

Chairman Mao later spoke highly of this movement, saying, "It is a movement of mobilization for the War of Resistance, a movement for the preparation of ideologies and cadres, and a movement for the mobilization of the whole nation" and "has great historical significance."

Lu Xuan, who is studying at Tsinghua University, is a member of the Tsinghua Student National Salvation Committee and enjoys the reputation of "beautiful talented woman". She not only actively participated in the "129" Anti-Japanese Salvation Movement, but also was one of the organizers.

In December 1935, on the cover of the 6th issue of the Shanghai Magazine of Public Life, edited by Zou Taofen, a photograph of the day of "129" was published: a woman standing on a platform, holding a horn in her hand, speaking to the surrounding crowd.

The woman in the photo who spoke in a cool and heroic manner is Lu Xuan.

In 1936, Lu Xuan served as the head of the Propaganda Department of the All-China Federation of Students for National Salvation and honorably joined the Communist Party of China. In September, she was sent by the All-China Federation of Students to Attend the First World Youth Congress in Geneva and spoke at the conference, allowing the spirit of "129" to go to the world.

Appointed by the organization, Lu Xuan worked abroad for a long time, participating in the editing of the "National Salvation Times" in Paris and the "Overseas Chinese Times" in New York, publicizing China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the anti-Japanese principles and policies of the Communist Party of China to the world, and collecting donations for China's anti-Japanese cause.

While editing the National Salvation Times in Paris, Lu Xuan met Rao Shushi, the founder of the National Salvation Times, fell in love with him and married him.

Rao Shushi was born in 1903, 11 years older than Lu Xuan. He is a native of Linchuan County, Fuzhou, Jiangxi.

Linchuan this place is very powerful, since the ancient literary style flourished. As early as the early Tang Dynasty's famous work "Preface to the Tengwang Pavilion", the author Wang Bo issued a praise for "illuminating the pen of Linchuan". To the Song Dynasty, it was also known as the "hometown of talents" because of the successive victories of the imperial examination. Wang Anshi, Yan Shu, Yan Jidao, Tang Xianzu and other great talents are outstanding representatives of them.

Born into an enlightened family, Rao's father, Rao Sicheng, was a prominent democrat and a participant in the August 1st Nanchang Uprising, and served as vice governor of Jiangxi Province for many years after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Rao Shushi, who received a good tutor and attended Shanghai University after graduating from high school, is the most educated of the senior leaders of our party, and is also an out-and-out Linchuan talent, and is proficient in English and Russian.

As early as 1923, Rao Shushi joined the Chinese Socialist Youth League, and in 1925 he transferred to the Communist Party of China, with a lot of revolutionary seniority, and served as the acting secretary of the Manchurian Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the secretary of the Party Group of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. Representative of the People's Republic of China to Red Workers International.

Before and after the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Rao Shushi went abroad twice, traveling all over Russia, Britain, France, and the United States, propagating our party's anti-Japanese and national salvation ideas, and engaging in international united front work, with remarkable achievements.

During the Liberation War, Rao Shushi became the number one in the East China Strategic Region, ranking above Chen Yi.

Before and after the founding of the People's Republic of China, Lu Xuan went abroad many times and participated in many international conferences.

In 1952, her husband, Rao Shushi, was transferred to Beijing to work as the head of the Central Organization Department.

Soon, Rao Shushi was suspended for examination because of problems at work, and later involved in the Pan Hannian incident, and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Lu Xuan's tragic fate began. Implicated in the Rao Shushi case, Lu Xuan was arrested twice and imprisoned for examination for seven or eight years.

In desperation, Lu Xuan had to end his marriage with Rao Shushi, return to singleness, and later form a new family with Zhu Ziqi, who had been Ren Bi's secretary. Zhu Ziqi, a native of Rucheng County, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, served as deputy secretary of the party group and executive secretary of the secretariat of the China Writers Association.

Since 1978, Lu Xuan has successively served as vice president of the Chinese Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and vice president of the Sino-US People's Friendship Association.

In April 2001, the 87-year-old Lu Xuan wrote a letter to the Party Central Committee asking for a new conclusion on the Rao Shushi issue. But the problem is too big to maintain the original conclusion.

On February 16, 2015, Lu Xuan died of illness at the age of 101.

Rao Shushi and Lu Xuan only had one daughter, named Rao Lanqin.

Rao Lanqin was born in 1938, when his parents were working for our party in Paris.

Shortly after her birth, her father, Rao Shushi, and her mother, Lu Xuan, were ordered to go to the United States to carry out international united front work, and the young Rao Lanqin was placed in the infant home attached to the hospital where she was born, and was temporarily cared for by comrades of the Paris branch of the COMMUNIST Party of China.

In 1939, when Rao Shushi and Lu Xuan were transferred back from the United States to participate in the War of Resistance, they wanted to take Paris to bring their daughter Rao Lanqin back together, but when they left, The Second World War broke out and the sea traffic was interrupted, so they had to change their route and return to China.

Rao Lanqin had to continue to stay in France, and the family was separated for nearly 10 years.

It was not until 1947, when Lu Xuan was sent to work for the International Democratic Women's Federation in Paris, that mother and daughter were able to meet.

In 1949, Lu Xuan left the International Democratic Women's Federation and brought Lu Cuan back to China, when Rao Lanqin was 11 years old.

Rao Lanqin entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an adult and worked at the U.S. Embassy in China. (Liu Jixing)
