In the Battle of Chosin Lake to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, the Chinese Volunteer Army emerged two major revolutionary miracles that shocked people's hearts. If the ice sculpture is a comprehensive embodiment of team spirit, then Yang Gensi is undoubtedly the ultimate display of individual heroism.
On November 28, 1950, Yang Gensi's company was ordered to hold a small ridge on the south side of Chosin Lake, responsible for cutting off the southward escape route of American troops. It repelled eight consecutive fierce enemy attacks, supported by a large number of aircraft and artillery. The desperate enemy launched a 9th attack, and more than 40 enemies climbed into positions. Yang Gensi, who had been wounded, resolutely picked up a 5-kilogram explosive package, pulled the fuse, rushed towards the enemy group, killed the enemy who climbed the position, completed the task of cutting off the enemy's retreat, and sacrificed himself heroically at the age of 28. This fearless revolutionary spirit, which regarded death as a homecoming, shocked all the soldiers of the United States.
Before his death, Yang Gensi once said three sentences: I do not believe that there are tasks that cannot be completed, I do not believe that there are difficulties that cannot be overcome, and I do not believe that there are enemies that cannot be defeated. These three "disbelief" are a vivid portrayal of the soldiers of the volunteer army who are not afraid of hardships and hardships and dare to fight in the sky and the earth.
On May 9, 1952, the leading organ of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army posthumously awarded Yang Gensi the title of "Special Hero", naming the company where he was before his death as "Yang Gensi Company". He was also the first and only two volunteer soldiers to receive special merit in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, the other being Huang Jiguang. The hero Wang Cheng in the well-known revolutionary film "Heroes and Children" is based on Yang Gensi.
In September 2009, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Yang Gensi was rated by the Central Propaganda Department and the Central Organization Department as one of the 100 Chinese that have touched the founding of New China.
