Another time, Saibei paid tribute to Cao Cao with a box of puff pastry. Cao Cao wrote the three words "Yihe Crisp" on the box and put it on the desk. Yang Xiu saw it and actually called on everyone to finish eating the crisp. Cao Cao asked why, and Yang Xiu replied, "The box clearly says 'one person and one bite of crisp', how dare you disobey the order of the prime minister?" Cao Cao smiled and praised Yang Xiu for his cleverness, but his heart was still disgusted.
Cao Cao was suspicious by nature, always afraid that someone would assassinate him. In 217 AD, during the confrontation with Liu Bei's Hanzhong Battle, Cao Cao was anxious in his heart, and one day when he slept, because he suspected that the guards who came to cover him with a quilt were going to kill him, he jumped up and drew his sword and killed a very loyal attendant, and then went to sleep. When he got up in the middle of the night, he pretended to be surprised and asked, "Who killed my close attendant?" "Everybody tells the truth. Cao Cao wept bitterly, lamenting that he had killed someone by mistake in his dream, and ordered someone to bury his close attendants. People thought that Cao Cao was really killing people in a dream, but Yang Xiu knew his intentions, and when he was buried, he sighed and said, "It's not that Cao Cao is in the dream, it's you in the dream!" When Cao Cao heard this, he hated Yang Xiu even more.
Cao Cao could not fight for Hanzhong, and seeing that the rain would run out for several days, the grain and grass would be exhausted, and the loss of soldiers would be broken, the retreating soldiers felt that there was no face left, and they were very troubled. One day, when the soldiers came to ask for the password for the evening, Cao Cao was picking up a chicken rack that the guards had just sent, thinking about the strategy of retreating, so he casually replied: "Chicken ribs!" ”
When the password "chicken ribs" reached yang Xiu, the master bookkeeper, he once again made himself clever and encouraged the soldiers to pack up and prepare to withdraw.
The soldier asked why. Yang Xiu said: Chicken ribs and chicken ribs, no meat at all, no taste in abandonment, and if you cannot win the battle now, and you are afraid of people's shame, you will be ordered to retire tomorrow. So everyone believed it.
This matter was known to Cao Cao, and Cao Cao cut off the head of Yang Xiu, who was only 44 years old when he died, in the name of seducing the hearts of the army.
Yang Xiu repeatedly offended Cao Cao with his words, could not control his desire to speak, and eventually invited the disaster of killing himself.
