The film is set in the United States in the 1850s, a little earlier than Brokeback Mountain. But the ending of the characters in the film is far from it.
"Brokeback Mountain" has a sense of heaviness that spans the era, and the ending of the last heaven and man is even more heartbreaking.
Carol doesn't zoom in on the entire LGBT population, it looks at more personal, more specific emotions, not grandiose, but sincere enough.
