1
Switch to Print Layout view. Click View and select Print Layout.
2
Place the cursor where you want to insert the footnote. The added footnote appears at the cursor position, so place the cursor at the end of the text, where you want to add the footnote reference.
3
Insert a footnote. Click Insert → References → Footnotes..." to open the Footnotes and Endnotes window. Select Footnotes, and then select your numbering options. You can have word programs automatically number your footnotes with incrementing numbers, or you can choose to insert custom symbols.
In the Word 2004 and 2008 programs, click Insert → "Footnote...".
Another way is to press Ctrl + Alt + F in a Windows computer to add a footnote and Ctrl + Alt + D to create an endnote. On a Mac, press The Command + Option + F keys to create a footnote and the Command + Option + E keys to add an endnote.
4
Enter the footnote text content. After you create a footnote, you'll be taken to the footnote text section at the bottom of the page. You can enter specific footnote content to annotate, and then click document when you're done to return to the document body.
