Lanzhou, December 5 (Xinhua) -- "To be honest, the explanation of sex and AIDS is very challenging, and the course is taught with both scientific connotations and not vulgar and old-fashioned with humorous language. Luo Xiaofeng, a teacher at the School of Public Health of Lanzhou University, said that some students called him "Cuiying Mountain Car God", but he did not expect it, and later it slowly spread among students.

Talking about this nickname, Luo Xiaofeng said that it began with one of his courses. He has always wanted to give students a special HIV course, and in 2017, he covered some of the content in the undergraduate public elective course "Health Education for College Students", but the students generally believe that the course is not targeted in the name of the course.

He found that everyone has a higher enthusiasm for learning about sex and AIDS, and his team has successfully applied for the general elective course "Sex and "Ai" of College Students" after careful consideration, overall planning, and relying on the platform of "Lanzhou University Undergraduate General Education Implementation Plan".

Once the course was opened, the number of courses selected surged, and after word of mouth by the students, it soon became a popular elective course in Lanzhou University, and the student attendance rate even exceeded many professional courses, and has become a key cultivation project of Lanzhou University's teaching reform demonstration course construction project and a high-quality online open course.

Luo Xiaofeng, who graduated from Fudan University, has been conducting HIV epidemiological research in Yunnan, Guangzhou and other places since 2010. In recent years, it has been active in the frontline of AIDS health education in Gansu Province, and has undertaken the task of HIV/AIDS popularization in colleges and universities, enterprises and institutions and social organizations.

Considering the current HIV epidemic situation and student needs of college students, Luo Xiaofeng said that his team made the course content into a MOOC (large open online course) in 2019 and opened it to the whole country. At present, the cumulative number of views is more than 5.57 million times, the cumulative number of course selections is more than 10,000, and the cumulative number of interactions is more than 190,000, which has benefited tens of thousands of students in nearly 600 schools across the country.

Luo Xiaofeng said frankly that many people will take it for granted that we are located in the west, the epidemic situation is not serious, and there is no need for such health education. College students are in their youth, energetic, active in thought, and frequent sexual exchanges, but their lack of sexual knowledge, weak sense of self-protection, and frequent high-risk behaviors have gradually highlighted the problem of sex and AIDS.

"As everyone knows, students from different provinces and even different countries will gather on the same campus, and our prevention and control tasks will be more arduous and the situation will be more complicated in the future." He said that there are no high-risk groups, only high-risk behaviors, and behaviors are completely controllable, so it is necessary to carry out scientific guidance from the source.

There is no denying that AIDS has invaded the campus. Luo Xiaofeng believes that from a professional point of view, virus carriers are more dangerous than AIDS patients. These virus carriers (especially those who are not aware of the infection status) have a high probability of creating new infected people in dating, love, and even later marriages.

According to the "2019-2020 National College Students Sexual and Reproductive Health Survey Report", nearly 70% of students will actively search for sexual knowledge online, but nearly 70% of them fail in sexual knowledge Q&A. "This shows that this 'active' approach to learning does not achieve the intended purpose, and that such education in universities is also 'make-up'." He said.

Luo Xiaofeng quoted a sentence by Wu Zunyou, China's chief scientist in the field of AIDS: "Cleaning needles and condoms is like a seat belt when driving, in order to reduce death and disability, not to condone traffic violations, let alone encourage car accidents." The same is true of health education, which is designed to raise students' awareness of self-protection and reduce the occurrence of high-risk behaviors, not otherwise.

Luo Xiaofeng said that although the epidemic may not be very serious in the local area, the incidence of high-risk behaviors is very common, and the psychological state of students is not enough to cope with high-risk behaviors and the consequences of behaviors, and what they can do is to give timely and correct guidance after gaining students' trust.

Lanzhou University is one of the 94 pilot units for HIV/AIDS prevention and control identified by the Ministry of Education and the National Health Commission. Luo Xiaofeng said that it is necessary to guide students to establish the awareness that "everyone is the first responsible person for their own health", work together to prevent and fight AIDS, and share health responsibilities, "Hoping to truly realize that there is no 'Ai' in a loving world."
